“Did you just shove your arm down that fucker’s throat?” “It is not a fucker, it is an alaas’sin.” She grabbed, with her remaining intact hand, the end of the demon’s silver leg, where it turned flesh, and tugged once, twice, putting more force into the movement each time. “A course of action I would have avoided had you not stolen my sword.” Nitara continued to stare at Ashrah’s mangled hand, her face twisted into an ugly tangle of wrinkles as if the wound insulted her, and ignoring the accusation, said, “Aren’t those demons extremely poisonous?” Ashrah twisted the alaas’sin’s bladed leg once more, and finally wrenching it free, resumed her interrupted journey. “For you mortals and your weak blood, yes.” The nensii’s heavy footsteps chased her. “Will you seriously pretend like nothing is wrong? You can’t keep on fighting with your hand like that!” “I can, and I shall.”

It began to sear into her hand, but Fox ignored the pain. She poured heat into the object until rivulets of silver ran through her fingers and drops fell like molten rain onto the ground below her. When the token was utterly destroyed, she finally stopped and turned back to the demon. “Perhaps I should offer you a deal?” She smiled. “There are others like me, Taevyn Fox,” it snarled. “You will never be safe. They will learn of what you have done. They will find you and avenge me.” “I have to be honest: I am really looking forward to seeing them try.” With one final burst of power, she seared the demon to the core, and it vaporized before her. With a laugh halfway between disbelieving and triumphant, Fox sank to the ground. The bird hopped closer. It resembled a large crow, now that she’d gotten a good look at it. “Oh, I get it, a murder of crows,” she chuckled. The crow cocked its head, looking her over. “Don’t worry about me, I’m just tired. That really takes it out of a person. I bet you are pretty tired as well.” The crow did not respond.

“They didn’t fix the roof very well in here, did they?” Av’ry gestured at the snow drift forming below a crumbled section. “They left that so we can get to the food stores above. Keeps them cold,” Mikiva explained. “If you get hungry, help yourself. There isn’t really anyone in charge of meals.” “The mages are cooking for themselves? Do they even know how?” “Cooking isn’t really the right word. They have been mostly eating jerky. And complaining about it.” “That makes more sense.” Av’ry chuckled. “Honestly, how hard is it to just fry something up?” “They get taken in by the military as children. Trained solely in magic and warfare. They never really learn any life skills.” “I never would have noticed,” Mikiva deadpanned. “Have they been a bit high-maintenance?” Av’ry chuckled. She sighed. “I suppose it doesn’t matter, as long as they do their part. Speaking of, ready to check that out?” Av’ry nodded, grabbing a stick of jerky off the table and following her back into the tunnel.

"If you want me to be." The cloth went back in the water, now high enough to fully submerge Genevieve's outstretched legs. Ophelia, leaning inches away, began wiping between Genevieve's thighs, just enough to tickle.

A harrowing, suffocated scream, like someone breaking the surface after nearly drowning, startled them. “Johnny?” Kung Lao hurried to his brother’s side. A strange light of a colour Askaly couldn’t describe—and that troubled her, for colours had been part of her life since she started drawing, eight hundred years ago—faded from Johnny’s eyes, and his gaze flitted around the room until it landed on Kung Lao. And for a disturbing moment, it was as if he had no idea who the man before him was. But then recognition returned to him, and he found Askaly hovering behind his brother. “Can you paint?” His voice was hoarse, as if he had stayed unconscious for so long his vocal cords had lost the habit of producing sounds. Still, she couldn’t ignore the urgency in his request and quickly took her sketchbook out. She sat down on the stool beside the bed, and after a quick analysis of Johnny’s heart rate assured her he wasn’t in a state of delirium, she asked, “What do you want me to draw?” “Mïn Ashå’s real face. I saw it.”

“Your mother was a truly gifted artist,” Collector Mortimer commented. “I was the one who helped her request her first set of paints from the Landlord. Did she ever tell you that?” That took me by surprise. “No, she didn’t.” “Mm-hm.” He nodded. “I helped her write her first letter when she was just a young girl, and in exchange she gave me her first painting. She made a number of paintings for me over the years. You know she was the first and only Artist we ever named in the Tenement? She requested it specifically when she made her Career List, though it wasn’t an official career, and we decided to take a chance and give her what she wanted.” He studied me with an odd gleam in his eyes. “You’re very much like your mother, Noah.” I put on an apathetic tone. “I’ve been told.”

Mikiva removed her sopping wet cloak, hung it by the fire and selected a table in the back, in a dark corner away from the door. She made sure to sit facing out into the room, so she could keep an eye on the other customers. Fox followed behind but didn’t remove her hood. Probably wise given her more distinctive hair. She approached the table and sat opposite Mikiva, with her back to the door. Mikiva blinked twice, surprised by the decision. Fox was too smart to leave her back open like that in hostile territory. It took her a beat to realize that the woman was relying on her to keep watch, instead. That was a new sensation. Mikiva had always been…alone. She’d had bosses, colleagues, even subordinates; but never anyone she trusted to watch her back. Never anyone who trusted her to watch theirs. Fox had just done so without a word. No explanation, no request for reassurance. Simple trust. A small smile tugged at the corner of her lips. “What?” Fox tipped her head to the side quizzically. “Nothing.” Mikiva shook her head.

Skarlet,” he cleared his throat, giving her a moment to acknowledge only by the movement of her hands. “… You scared the piss outta me. Thought I’d lose you all over again.” Kano could only watch, uncertain whether or not she’d want to be touched… Watching the distant look in her eye continue as she glanced at the IV in her arm. He didn’t expect a response, he didn’t need one, seeing her awake was enough. Even still, the vacant stare began to worry him, sitting up slowly to make a trip again through the carnage to pick something up at her request.
