agree with this (hah) but also think a particular mistake the left made for a long time online, and still makes to an extent, is failing to understand that the person whose mind you may actually change is the one reading the argument you're having, not the one you're arguing with

Lots of criticisms of this DOJ for “withholding” a lot of the Epstein files, in defiance of the law. I see files are missing. Seems to be a fair criticism.

But what if DOJ isn’t “withholding” any files? What if instead they severed cases from “the Epstein files” and are making a technical argument?

THE 1980S: ROY COHN'S ORWELLIAN AMERICA A 1990 New York mag profile confesses that media coverage stemmed from both laziness and the ceaseless drive of both Donald and Ivana to make themselves available, even if the reporting was unflattering and the ratings were low: *The deep secret of all Trump coverage is that it is cost-effective news-Nielsen ratings and newsstand sales aside. Everything is easily available: lawyers' statements by fax, PR quote for the day, file footage of all the principals, photo opps at convenient midtown locations-near news offices & TV studios. Trump is accessible. That's why it may run forever," wrote Edwin Diamond in a March 1990 column titled "Bonfire of the Inanities." That was 1990. Transpose this into a world where national media is conglomerated in elite coastal cities, digital and cable stories must be produced in a frenzied 24/7 cycle, fact-checking on the wane, lines btwn news and entertainment-and truth & reality-have blurred, creating an infotainment nexus driven as much by the need to fill space & kill time as by the desire to make money. That is the media world that Trump inhabited in later decades, one whose vulnerabilities he understood intimately, for he had helped create them. In later chapters, I describe how this loss of leverage in the media occurred, and how Trump capitalized on it, but it is critical to observe how early the seeds of destruction were planted-and that the media reaped the harvest of its own demise. A striking example: coverage of the divorce itself. In 1990, Trump was brought low after decades of flagrant highs. Journalists pounced. Roy Cohn dead, no longer a threat. Trump exposés abounded as Ivana opened up to the press. These included scathing early 1990s Vanity Fair profiles, including one in which 12-year-old Donald Trump Jr. told a reporter that Trump did not love him, or himself, but only money; to the 1993 book Lost Tycoon by Harry Hurt IlI, which declared that Trump did not know how to have sex with women and describes Ivana purchasing a book on female orgasms and announcing "I have to give this to The Donald; he can never find the spots." From the start of the marriage, their terrible sex life had sent Trump running back to Roy Cohn, who was forced to write a new prenup to placate Ivana. Hurt's book paints a disturbing picture of Trump's conception of love and consensual sex. The worst revelation of Hurt's book is one made in Ivana's 1990 divorce deposition and reemerged during the 2016 campaign: Ivana had said at the time of her divorce that Trump, angered by a painful scalp surgery to remove a bald spot conducted by a doctor Ivana recommended, grabbed her, pulled out hair from her own scalp, bellowed, "Your fucking doctor ruined me!," and raped her. The deposition papers describe a terrified Ivana hiding in a closet for hours after the rape, emerging in the morning to find Trump sneering at her: "Does it hurt?" (Before Hurt's book was published, Ivana retracted her testimony, saying she was not raped "in a literal or criminal sense.") When Trump's 2016 campaign began to pick up steam, making Hurt worry he may become the candidate, Hurt asked his publisher, Norton, to reissue Lost Tycoon. But they told him the 33-year-old book was now "too dangerous to publish." Hurt ended up republishing it himself on Kindle to try to get the word out. In 2015, a Daily Beast reporter wrote a piece detailing the alleged rape of Ivana and was threatened by Trump's aspiring Roy Cohn replacement, lawyer and future felon Michael Cohen." "What I'm going to do to you is going to be fucking disgust-ing. You understand me?" Cohen told the Daily Beast reporter. "You write a story that has Mr. Trump's name in it, with the word trape, and I'm going to mess your life up... for as long as you're on this frickin' planet... you're going to have judgments agains. you, so much money. You'll never know how to get out from underneath it." These threats were reported in The Daily Beast Where was Trump in the summer of 94? That should have been answered before the election. In June 2016, an anonymous plaintiff, using the pseudonym Katie Johnson and later Jane Doe, filed a lawsuit accusing Trump of raping her when she was 13yrs old — the same age as Ivanka that year. Doe's claim was consistent with facts from the court case against Jeffrey Epstein, for whom Doe was forced to work. In 2002, Trump told New York mag that he had known Epstein, a financier with a mysterious past, for 15yrs & thought he was a terrific guy. The story of Epstein will define our era, and may clear up a lot of incongruities if ever fully told. But it is also one that was relentlessly suppressed for decades. In July 2019, Epstein was arrested after a series of exposés by Julie K. Brown of the Miami Herald prompted more victims to come forward. In August 2019, he allegedly hung himself in a Manhattan prison, under circumstances that raise suspicion that he did not die of suicide but strangulation. The guards supposedly watching Epstein fell asleep when he allegedly killed himself, no cameras recorded his death. Meanwhile, prompted by the flurry of coverage and his arrest and death, Epstein's accusers continue to reveal the horror of his operation. By the end of summer 2019, over eighty women said they were recruited by Epstein and sexually abused or exploited.* I am updating this chapter one week after Epstein's mysterious death, with new information confirming my worst suspicions by the hour. I hope that by the time you read it, the women who were brave enough to tell their stories will have seen some justice. I anticipate that what people learn about Epstein in the years to come will have significant geopolitical implications if the full extent of his ilicit activity is revealed and accomplices brought to trial. This has never been the case for Epstein or for the circle of elites who sheltered Epstein from repercussions with the understanding that he would return the favor. things about the Trump era is the feeling like you are living through a rupture in time: the ceaseless revelations about the past; the mix of chaos and inertia that defines the present; and the uncertain future. The same names and countries appear again and again: the United States, the United Kingdom, the former USSR, Israel, Saudi Arabia. We see the same disturbing patterns: Epstein is not the only pedophile Trump befriended. Other friends and business associates who allegedly ran or participated in underage trafficking rings include his former business partner Tevfik Arif (who was acquitted of the charges despite significant evidence);51 the modeling agent John Casablancas, for whose company Trump sent teenage Ivanka to work; Mueller probe target George Nader, who has been indicted on, and pled not guilty to, multiple counts of underage sex trafficking and child porn; Dershowitz, a Trump defender who has denied the allegations; and according to Wayne Barrett, Roy Cohn. This list does not include alleged pedophiles like Roy Moore, whom Trump has defended for political pur-poses, but is limited to the social and business circle he sought out on his own volition. No reporter has asked Trump about his own preteen rape allegation or why he invited so many pedophiles and sex traffickers into his life-not even after Epstein's 2019 arrest. And so we are left with a narrative about rape, espionage, and threats; a narrative of missing pieces. One of those pieces is justice. In the 1990s, history ended with the specter of the wealthiest men in the world raping teenage girls provided by a mafia-affiliated blackmailer. History ended in a sealed file, history ended in a silent scream, history ended with the last man warning you that if you tell anyone, you'd end too.
