Also not all welfare spending is the same. Eliminating child poverty is to an extent not just redistribution but an investment in their education, employment, future earnings, tax payments, and propensity to be involved in crime.
Welfare spending is currently 1.2% of GDP *lower* than in 2012-13.

Abolition of two-child cap is best viewed as a correction than an increase.
Is welfare spending ''out of control''?

Total welfare spending in Britain in 2025-26 is estimated to be 10.8 per cent of GDP.

That's just 0.8 per cent of GDP higher than in 2007-08, and total welfare spending has actually fallen fallen by 1.2 per cent of GDP since 2012-13⤵️

If you rebooted RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK today with the same temporal margins, it’d be set in the 1980s. Neo-Nazi punks would have their faces melted by the opening of a forbidden arcade cabinet at the KB Toys at your local mall. Indiana Jones would wear a Hawaiian shirt and Chuck Taylor sneakers.
We are now further away from the theatrical release of Raiders of the Lost Ark (June 12, 1981) than it was from the year it takes place in (1936). We have reached the Indiana Jones event horizon.

Nowadays I follow the news by seeing what you all say about it on here. The amount of time I devote to actually watching "The News" has declined to almost nothing. I'm trying to work out if this is because I am sliding into depression, or just getting old, or some third thing I don't yet understand.

Somehow this got missed off the "Benefit Street" front pages today
70% of the additional spending from removing the two-child limit will go to families who are in work. This is targeting support for low-income working households who are being priced out of a decent standard of living despite doing everything asked of them.

How long ago was Benefits Street last broadcast? Has it now entered the Pantheon of dated references that mean nothing to anyone under 35 but fill tabloids that are only bought by pensioners, the middle-aged, and actually dead people?

This is an unspooling thread of total joy. A slug of forgotten comedy history.

The brilliant female clowns of silent cinema. This might be the most ALIVE thing you’ll see all day.
Since we are once again dealing with "the only silent era comedians of note were men" I feel I need to stand up for the ladies.

The first ever episode of Stranger Things had a bit where they talk about the cool bands they listen to. That included The Smiths, who hadn't released any records at the point in time the scene was supposed to be occurring at. One of several clues that ST universe is not quite the same as ours.

The best thing I learned from Macaulay Culkin at last night’s Home Alone screening is that his 4yo son loves the movie, thinks of himself as Kevin, and has no idea that that’s his dad. Culkin is attempting to hide that fact for as long as possible
