It’s the “season of love and giving”…but this year, doesn’t it seem more like a “season of fear and taking”? Like many of you, I’ve been saddened by the human impact of draconian government budget cuts and how angry many housed Americans are at unhoused Americans.

Legacy firm MPN Boilers, long rooted in fossil-fuel systems, is rethinking its future under Local Law 97. Now, MPN is positioning itself as a leader in the clean energy transition with water-source heat pumps:

The ACA isn't just "health care for people who don't have a conventional employer." It also disallows something that was incredibly common 20 years ago, which I fear is getting lost to generational memory: insurance companies could deny you health care for essentially any previous health problem.
I'm dubious about Amazon's commitment to keeping pre-existing conditions a thing of the past.

If you've ever been to a naturalization ceremony, you know they're filled with people whose palpable love of this country is twenty times stronger than the pinched "patriotism" of any native-born MAGA chud.

Just unspeakable assholery.

Applications for air quality permits confirm figures that Source NM previously reported: If approved, Project Jupiter could emit more than 14 million tons of greenhouse gases per year. By comparison, Albuquerque and Las Cruces emit a combined 6.7 million metric tons of greenhouse gases annually.
Data center Project Jupiter’s greenhouse gas emissions could rival NM’s largest cities • Source New Mexico
Project Jupiter's developers have asked the state for permission to emit as many greenhouse gases as the state's largest cities combined.

I cannot over-emphasize how absolutely fucking insane this is.

These are the most expensive fuel sources in existence, with no abatement equipment to speak of, no smoke stacks to disperse pollution.

We could just build a power line, but instead we’ll suck on tractor tailpipes.

Universities are assembling larger and larger teams to deal with academic integrity issues--mostly focused on AI--while simultaneously holding AI "writing" contests, AI-themed events, "hey, come play with these fun tools!" The messages are so mixed, it's criminal. Because AI is bloated with money.

And I swear, once again, this is not dunking on kids. We are seeing this at all levels--even grad students. AI + social media has had a profound impact on how we think and process our world, and we can't stop to reflect on it, because billionaires keep hurling addictive tech at us.

Not sure if this is a case of old man shakes fist at cloud (me, not the poster), or if we really are seeing a convergence of events that are decimating young adults' ability to reason. I'm thinking long covid, Gen AI, social media shortening attention spans, college as a service, etc
An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.

NIPSCO to supply 3 GW to Amazon data centers in northern Indiana
Northern Indiana Public Service Co. and an affiliate expect to spend about $7 billion on 2.6 GW of gas, 400 MW of storage and transmission — to be paid for by Amazon.
