I think this is true (hopefully it's not) but if Charlottesville had set a goal last December of increasing the city's protected bike lanes by at least 1 foot in 2025, they would not be on track to meet that goal.

1. UVA’s (already low) Black enrollment drops 25%.

2. DOJ alleges anti-white discrimination.

3. UVA’s right-wing leadership cuts “deal.” UVA is now legally barred from taking LEGAL steps designed to fix (1).

It was never a “deal.” It was a rigged “negotiation” to freeze these demographics.
An AP analysis finds drops in the number of Black freshmen at many elite colleges in the two years since the Supreme Court’s decision ending affirmative action.

This is harmful not just because it's victim blaming, but that it creates a false equivalence in terms of the responsibility of drivers and pedestrians: "bright clothes, headlights on."

Drivers have *much more* responsibility to keep road users safe! And that includes not speeding.
Hey Marylanders! Darker evenings don’t mean more danger on our roads. Just a little extra caution — bright clothes, headlights on — can make a huge difference.

Let’s keep each other safe. Be the difference!

In OS design, trading-off performance, extensibility, and security is fundamental. How do you balance them?

We're launching a 10-week virtual seminar for engineers to go deep on this topic, led by OS researcher Amit Levy.

not my idea, but it’s a very good one and I’m going to start pushing it: the City of Charlottesville should aim to permanently close the Downtown Mall vehicle crossings no later than 8/12/2027.

Presumably, the late notice was an attempt to be strategic and avoid scrutiny? That seems to have backfired as it makes the response urgent and not something to get to later when time frees up (which it never does).
@mtgillikin.bsky.social up. notes how disrespectful the way this proposal was brought up was so disrespectful. spent 15 hours on a holiday weekend getting up to speed on this shit!

The bar is low in Charlottesville, but two new (short, painted) bike lanes are exciting! One at McCormick and University, and the other east on JPA at Brandon.

How come in Charlottesville the time between a public open house to replace a 100 year old water main and tearing up Locust is like 2 weeks, but none of the bike lane projects seem to ever get started?

This marked off space should be a pocket park rather than asphalt and parking place for RMC vehicles.

"In total, the Board members have donated over $4.8 million to Republican campaigns and candidates, approximately $10,000 to Democratic campaigns and candidates and approximately $39,000 to causes categorized as “other.”"
A dive into the Board of Visitors’ political donations
Here is a look at Board members’ political donations — all but one of whom has records of political donations which are overwhelmingly to Republican candidates and campaigns.

I appreciate the city saying 1) “we are still waiting on Judge Worrell, who is taking forever” and 2) “we are just going to reinstate the new zoning code, duh”

Years of community planning and engagement overruled on a technicality. What a disgrace. This judge allowing a very small number of unelected residents to decide the housing policy for everyone.
We are very disappointed with the ruling today striking down the city’s zoning code. It is noteworthy the plaintiffs didn’t want to go to trial and argue the case on its merits, but rather used a technicality to win. We look forward to supporting the city’s efforts to reinstate the new zoning code.

This is all it is, a cover for NIMBYism. There is no discussion about the opportunity cost, which any good faith proposal would have to, and want to, address. Particularly in a space constrained city.
Some of the concrete items in the DP article are great! But, the prioritization of green space in our area has often been weaponized by NIMBYs in opposition to the steps required for a carbon-free economy including renewal energy infrastructure and denser housing development

The Verve construction site closed all nearby bike lanes. Why? To ensure there was street space to park their own cars. And to store barrels.

This is great. It's wild that you can be going 28%-40% over the speed limit and still not get a ticket, but, at least it's something.
