Another action packed newsletter! I used to think “Think Globally, Act Locally” was nothing more than a trite slogan, but now I can see it’s an urgent and essential priority

It’s true! Were it not for his post, there’s no telling how long we might have gone before stumbling upon that idea ourselves

I hesitate to ask... is an autistic dog or cat even a thing? And, how would one know if they had one? Oh, nevermind, it's not a rational set of beliefs, so there's really no reason for me to even entertain it as such

C'mon Cville peeps, we can make this happen!

for me, it's to have a stack full of assignments to grade. nothing fosters urgency to clean and tidy like avoidance of the tedious task of grading

I’ll add to that this whole situation is another very good reason for significant reform to how the Board of Visitors operates. They were told about these problems (and had a legal and moral responsibility to know about them), but chose to give Kent a massive raise and lengthy contract extension.
stevenljohnson.org
Any specific reasons you have in mind? Expense of right of way acquisition? Because people who live in between want it to be as hard as possible for city folks to get there? Or ... ?
stevenljohnson.org
That would be amazing. Maybe it could go thru Biscuit Run and connect from its southern end down to Scottsville? I don’t know the area well enough to know if that would help much or not
stevenljohnson.org
Yup, most of the distance between UVA/DTM and CHO/Hollymead area is county/VDOT maintained. The city can do more to safely create routes heading north, but further connectivity is a county/state funding issue
stevenljohnson.org
If/once it happens years from now, the Three Notch'd Trail will provide safe biking between Crozet and UVA/Cville. I don't know of any plans for getting out towards Zion Crossroads. The advantage of connecting Cville <--> CHO/Hollymead is there's lots and lots of people and places in between

I just read through a 250 page lawsuit filed last week against Craig Kent, much of his leadership team, and UVA filed by 4 current/former UVA surgeons and the widows of 2 men who died receiving care at UVA. It’s a look under the hood of what drove the no confidence vote a year ago. It’s really bad.

I think nearby condos are a more likely model than Eagles Landing. re: green space, I prefer higher density building in the city instead of far lower density eliminating green space in surrounding counties. I haven't heard anything about Lewis Mt. ... anything in particular in mind?
stevenljohnson.org
Among everything else, that's the part that frustrates me the most. Virginia, thanks to a long path dependency of DARPAs role in creating the Internet, is the data center capital of the world, and the average VA rate payer is forced to subsidize the AI companies that are trying to replace their jobs
stevenljohnson.org
Yeah, that price has an expectation of a whole lotta housing going in there. $100K per building lot would be 70 units... and, they can probably get a lot more in there
stevenljohnson.org
AI CapEx is the only thing keeping the US economy afloat right now and the level of investment is based on an expectation that AI will replace nearly all existing labor costs. If it does, that's a major economic issue; if it doesn't, that's a painful bubble to burst
stevenljohnson.org
I'm old enough to remember the dot-com bubble bursting and companies like Pets.com & Webvan (among many, many others) flaming out. But, the scale of AI investments is *far* larger though, as it is fueled by Big Tech monopoly profits and an intensive (irrational) hype-driven FOMO

I've been thinking for a while that the home insurance market is the mostly likely mechanism for forcing society to confront climate change and, perhaps, take seriously the necessary structural changes required to transition to a post-carbon economy
