I just finished up the commitments for my day job (an employer for whom I do not speak for or represent ), so I finally have the time to weight in a Question of the Day about UVa governance: how can we keep this kind of mess from happening ever again?
👇🏽 this is just the start of the fireworks for today 👇🏽
The gaslighting is just wild. Youngkin is urging the BOV to, “take advantage of the most inclusive and successful Presidential search process in UVA’s history.”

🕵🏽‍♀️ Facts:
- Federal overreach
- Forced firings
- Hasty Appointments
- Votes of No Confidence
- Lawsuits
- Secret deals to appease Trump

Cville area peeps, here's your chance to be a snow clearing hero for your neighborhood
I got this snowblower thing with rotating blades like a tiller, needs 2cycle oil mixed with gas, I don’t have time to mess with it before the storm, anyone more engine saeve than me want to borrow it?
January 23, 2026 at 9:41 PM
Uh, oh. That sounds like a lot of ice for many trees to bear
Quick update, graphics later:

1) For central VA: 8-12” snow & sleet, lower totals due to more sleet & compaction; 12”+ still expected in mountains.

2) Sadly, ice accumulation forecast now up a bit to 0.20-0.50”. This concerns me greatly.

More later after I go stock up on flu medicines.

We are grateful for PACEM and the other organizations and individuals working to support people experiencing homelessness in our area as Charlottesville faces severe weather this week.

Today is a good day to make a financial contribution to PACEM if you’re able: pacemshelter.org/where-will-t...

I'm trying a new "rule" lately - I have to take some action for the world I want (a call, a donation, help a neighbor) before I allow myself to settle in to scroll bad news.
I joined the Green Party and I got involved. And being in places where there are other people who want change - and doing stuff together.

That community will ground you and make you feel seen and saner.
This is such valuable advice and put plainly. Please take a moment.

Misinformation and rumors cause panic — Share facts only! Try to get the SALUTE information so the sighting can be verified. Not “I saw ICE south of town” but “at about 10am, I saw 4 men in uniforms (couldn’t see what kind) in 2 unmarked black SUVs getting gas at the Exxon on Route 20”

The Belonging in Charlottesville online conversation was great! Click through for a recording.

In addition to Dr. Chapple sharing lessons learned around the country, Sarah Malpass shared inspiring work of Fifeville Neighborhood Association to further anti-displacement efforts in Cville
Here is the recording of our webinar “Belong in Charlottesville: Effective Strategies to Prevent Displacement” with Karen Chapple from the University of Toronto and Sarah Malpass from the Fifeville Neighborhood Association.

This is an excellent discussion!

Two thoughts regarding the weekend before I sign off for the night. One, given current trends highest snowfall totals would be north of C'ville. Two, there are increasing signs this storm will feature sleet and/or freezing rain, especially south of C'ville. Lower snow totals would result.

G'night.

This was really good. If you couldn’t make it, I hope you’ll listen to the recording when you’re stuck at home during the snow storm. We will post it tomorrow on @livablecville.bsky.social’s YouTube channel.
We are very excited to announce our next webinar!

On Wednesday, January 21 from 6:30-7:30pm, Dr. Karen Chapple from the University of Toronto will be speaking to us on “Belonging in Charlottesville: Effective Strategies to Prevent Displacement.”

Good reminder that your truly good friends do not always bring the best news (see point 2 below)
Current weekend thoughts:
1) Confident in at least 6-12+", forecast could trend higher.
2) Hints of system ending later Sunday as freezing rain/sleet (ice). Sub-freezing temps + windy Monday = power outage potential GREATLY increased.
3) Frigid temps to follow --> very little melting.

More later.

Crozetians! (And really all Albemarle/cville neighbors). We'll be hosting another Livable meetup at Bar Botanical next week, assuming the snows haven't completely shut central virginia down. Come chat about affordability & transit, make grand plans, connect with neighbors - a guaranteed good time.

Solid advice as we face decades of climate change disruption and related instability ahead: "We must actively take on the world as it is, not wait around for a world we wish to be."

Entire thread has clarity for this moment & need to guard against complacency—highly relevant to US politics, too
🇨🇦PM Carney just schooled our cowardly European leaders at #Davos. This speech was clearly aimed at them:

"We must actively take on the world as it is, not wait around for a world we wish to be."

"What does it mean for middle powers to live the truth? First it means naming reality..." (🧵1/6)

❄️‼️⛄️
New data since last post but thinking is the same. In short:
1) I see potential for at least 6" of snow in central VA from Saturday afternoon into Sunday.
2) I see the potential for some to get double-digit totals.
3) Highs: teens/20s, lows: singles/teens mean slippery, dangerous travel expected.
