A Black man was killed by ICE (off duty) in Los Angeles on New Year’s Eve. And like Renée Good, he was an American citizen. But most people have not heard about Keith Porter.

I need y’all to realize this. Black people experience this lack of visibility all the time when it comes to being victims.

Olympic hockey players are going to be heading to the rink and getting dressed at one end of the rink in a plywood box with a door-sized whole cut in the side of it like they're kids in St. Paul.
if you're surprised to learn that the Winter Olympics are just a month away, don't worry, you're not alone, the people building all the venues in Italy also appear to be surprised the Olympics are just a month away

I was tinkering with this post-apoc story like 15 years ago that starts out with hackers doing counter-surveillance against a tyrannical police state government.

My version results in nuclear war so yay I guess.

TBF tho all my post-apoc ideas result in nuclear war, though. 2 minutes 2 midnight.

ICE has spent hundreds of millions on surveillance. Some technologists are building tools to find it, map it, and push back. www.eff.org/deeplinks/2...
How Hackers Are Fighting Back Against ICE
A few enterprising hackers have started projects to do counter surveillance against ICE, and hopefully protect their communities through clever use of technology.

Don’t mind me, I’m just going to crack open some Hannah Arendt from the collection of history books I have lugged around for 34 years so I can remember what happened next.

the bloopy water is soothing
Here is a video of a frozen creek that had begun to thaw, and the water was flowing beneath the thin ice on top. I took this because it was soothing and wonderfully bloopy and I wanted to listen to it for hours. You are all welcome to enjoy it, too. Let your brain settle here and rest for a moment.

“Uruguay did what most nations still call impossible: it built a power grid that runs almost entirely on renewables—at half the cost of fossil fuels. The physicist who led that transformation says the same playbook could work anywhere—if governments have the courage to change the rules.”
Uruguay’s Renewable Charge: A Small Nation, A Big Lesson For The World
Uruguay built a power grid that runs 99% on renewables—at half the cost of fossil fuels. Here’s how its bold energy overhaul became a global model.

When I stepped away from social media this week, I caught up on the new season of FALLOUT, which is all about a wealthy weirdo, one who works in tech and is obsessed with a paranoid vision of eugenics, bringing about the end of the world.

So that was a nice change of pace.

I am in favor of dismantling all government agencies created since 2000 and reinstituting those that were dismantled in 2024 but were in existence prior to 2000.

Basically get rid of DHS and Space Force. That latter mostly for spite, the former for obvious reasons.
