It has occurred to me that on a self-styled "author" account I should talk about "books" and "writing" so I guess I'll start doing that soon
I go to the effort to google this phrase and docs shows up and tells me I should say "spent the day away"

No, docs, that means something else entirely

Working on the ol WIP and realizing today I get to name the undertaker

And fighting the urge to name him Dampe

The funniest part of this WIP is how I introduced Millie's two kids (1 and 3 years) in chapter 2 and very intentionally didn't put them in a position to talk or interact with anyone until chapter 19

At which point I had to figure out how tf to write kids

Me: "Look I made a WIP playlist, just like you told me to"

Hypothetical agent/publicist: "This is just both of The Last Dinner Party's albums, plus the acoustic versions, with no skips"

"Yes."

In one of my shelved WIPs, I wrote in a board/card game that the MCs play with their roommates, while getting blackout drunk (the story starts in college)

It involves a gameboard for moving the pieces around, power-ups, and explosions

Tamla finishes the game by blowing her pieces up with a grenade
Are there any sort of games in your book/wips setting? Are they physical sports? Board games? What do they mean to the setting and your characters? #WritingPrompt

Recent reads: New Year!

They Who Bring the Light by Jessica Conwell:
Damn she did it again. Beautiful, heartbreaking, READ THIS AUTHOR, easy 5⭐

Brigands and Breadknives by Travis Baldree:
Takes a big story turn I didn't expect, but keeps the emotional stakes and heart we expect from the series, 5⭐

The south is normal pseudo-medieval faire: padded gambesons, chainmail, helmets

The north has indigenous armorams, whose wool when woven is much stronger than any other textile. That and the silversteel, which can only be worked by their most skilled mage-smiths, and can be either stretched thin /
#JanuaryWorldbuilders Heya! I can't let it ONLY be weapon talk this week! What kind of armor do your characters wear? Or what kind generally is made in your world? What material is it made from?

I know "a breath he didn't know he was holding" is a cliche, but how about "a sob that she didn't know she had left?"

We're all about subversion in this house

As I work on this book that doesn't even have a name yet, it occurs to me that I also have no clue on this planet what genre it is

It's... horror adjacent? Is it funny enough to be a horror-comedy? It's got vampires but doesn't have the trappings of epic fantasy

Betas can tell me later #writesky

Sometimes as I write I ask myself, "Is this too much? Is this overdramatic?"

The answer has yet to be "yes," but it's for the best that I ask.

A brief accounting of writerly things I did this year:

1. Read a lot, finished 26(?) books
2. Sent a lot of queries
3. Got to 30k on my 2nd novel
4. Played a shit ton of DnD with my writer friends
5. Started playing music again (creative hobby so close enough)
December 31, 2025 at 8:25 PM
My writer's mind is an ouroboros of "this DnD backstory would make a great book" and "this book I'm writing would make a great DnD campaign"

One of the best parts of being a writer is getting to sow chaos whenever you like

"Would this scene be better if I started a fire?" Hell yeah it would

Movie set where you grew up:

I graduated from UL, and the "Jackson's Bayou Muddogs" are a parody of our old mascot, the Bulldogs

And yes, I know people who talk like they do in this movie, and yes, it's hilarious

Helfnir's powers make him effectively a waterbender

BUT he spends the first several chapters trudging through swamp, getting rained on, and being thrown into shit water, so safe to say he's had his fill for a while
Greetings, #NovemberWorldbuilders! Let's talk about your MC today. What is their relationship with water like? Do they know how to swim? Have they ever caught a fish? Or is it just something that gets in the way during their long journey? Maybe they've never *seen* a body of water so big

Military tactics

There's already sort of a scene where they're overlooking an enemy camp and he explains how they set up, how to get past them, what they did that's out of the ordinary, and from that deduces their likely tactics

The Plains operate under an emperor, who's supported by a series of lower lords and clan heads who govern by the consent of the people (not formal elections but still a consensus system)

They're on the cusp of building themselves a functional republic
How do the politics of your book's world work? Is it a monarchy? A democracy? Theocracy? How does it affect your characters? #WritingPrompt

Tilda didn’t answer, just leaned against the old stained wood. Jethel grunted as if in agreement and carried poor Albiert’s head outside to reunite it with the rest of him. Tilda just swayed there for a minute, taking it in.

Awfully macabre way to leave it
