I find NBC's "conflict of interest" excuse ridiculous. Commentators are not in a position to influence how judges score anyone's performance, and Gabi doing commentary won't affect her ex partner's results in any way. NBC should honor its contract with Gabi and let her do her job!
In her new memoir, Gabriella Papadakis alleges her former skating partner Guillaume Cizeron was “controlling.” Cizeron says that's “a smear campaign” ahead of Milan-Cortina. Now, NBC is dropping Papadakis: "Her new book creates a clear conflict of interest." Damn!

Gabriella Papadakis' feud with ex-skating partner Guillaume Cizeron led NBC to alter ice dance coverage at the 2026 Milan Winter Olympics.

It’s funny how Wikipedia used to seem relatively unreliable, because it was written by regular people instead of encyclopedia experts, and now it seems relatively reliable, because it’s written by regular people instead of glib CliffsNotes robots
wikipedia turns 25 today! the last unenshittified major website! backbone of online info! triumph of humanity! powered by urge of unpaid randos to correct each other! somehow mostly reliable! "good thing wikipedia works in practice, because it sure doesn't work in theory" - old wiki adage

This is huge: For the first time since the early 1970s, coal power generation has fallen in both China & India.

It undercuts claims that decarbonisation is pointless while they expand coal. Renewables are no longer just adding capacity — they’re displacing coal.

Some of my 📚 have included 50+ photos. I've spent *entire summers* tracking down rights holders + handling clearances. Every copyrighted graphic in 100+ articles and chapters: all researched, cleared, and, in most cases, *paid for*. That's a ton of time, expertise, effort, and (unrecouped) 💰.

Watching Buffy S4E20 with my daughter (15) where Giles sings "Freebird"

Spain’s approach to immigration should serve as an example. Spain will continue to defend a migration model that works, for Spain & could also help awaken an ageing Europe,

And I should have mentioned donations are Gift Aid eligible for UK taxpayers.
This sanctuary in the UK has already rescued five lions from Ukraine. Now it is raising funds to rescue a Eurasian lynx. Every donation helps: thebigcatsanctuary.org/cats-in-cris...

I don’t think this is good advice.
More from Starmer’s political cabinet today, where he told ministers to ignore Labour’s dire poll ratings

“I do not underestimate the scale of the task. But I have no doubt about this team. Governments do not lose because polls go down. They lose when they lose belief or nerve. We will do neither.”

When someone suggested using AI to translate work this week I found a graduate student with the expertise and the institutional funds to get them paid to do the translation. Everyone was happy in the end. It’s a tiny thing but an example of a small difference one can make.
Deep breath
Ok I'm going to try and stay calm
But I'll point out that AI translation is literally causing translators to be fired (see the whole Harlequin line in France)

2025 was mostly garbage, but there were some good moments.

One of my favorites was when a family of beavers built a dam in just a few days, saving the Czech Republic 30 million Czech koruna (US$1.2 million) for a wetland restoration project the government had been planning for 7 years. 🦫 🌿
These eager beavers saved the Czech government $1.2 million
After plans stalled for a new dam in the Czech Republic, eight beavers saved the day seemingly overnight. “At this point, nothing that beavers do surprises me.”
