This is a great reflection on what I thought I saw in the ‘90,s. I will take exception to the description of David Mamet’s work as “lyrical “.

Must read. I concur. 😭
This is your must read this week.

Read this.

It is about leukemia and the powers and limits of science and the terrifying dangers of the turn against it. It is human and excoriating and beautiful. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
A Battle with My Blood
When I was diagnosed with leukemia, my first thought was that this couldn’t be happening to me, to my family.

Today, after months of requests, I toured the Broadview ICE Processing Facility. I want to share what I saw.

The facility has no food vendor, no medical care, and detainees have to use toilets in the middle of shared cells. These are in no way suitable conditions to be holding anyone — period.

What I’m calling “Aparkalypse” Those who want to beat the crowd fleeing from danger: this is California. Do others see/take part in this trend? (My theory: could be a reaction to the chaos wrought by the recent devastating fires). 🔥 🚗🚙

Editors have a really hard job, and the good ones can make something unreadable readable, and the great ones can make something unreadable into something good. But they're basically invisible, until someone tries to write without one.

@zadiesmith.bsky.social wish I could have heard this stirring speech live. Thank you for this love letter to, and advocacy of, libraries and librarians everywhere. 👏📚
Great piece by Zadie Smith. When the right talks about classics or "Western" culture, these works are only important to the extent that it demonstrates their superiority, they have no interest in art in and of itself beyond that www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

In the century leading up to 1975, nearly 6000 freighters went down in the Great Lakes.

The Edmund Fitzgerald was the last.

The last. In 50 years, not a single commercial freighter has been lost in the Great Lakes.

Why?

It's NOAA. Of course it's NOAA.
