This headline and subhead are unbecoming of the times. Reminds me of Toronto Star headlines about the 1990's Blue Jays: "Bell Tolls in Key to Jays Victory" and the like. Funny for a rag, but weak for the NYT.

Do the Germans have a word for when autocorrect swaps in words you don't want, while also ignoring the obviously misspelled words?

Not sure if this is true (it could be!), but as I've gotten better at the NYT crossword, my favorite days have become Monday and Tuesday, which I do downs-only, and the occasional Thursday (when the gimmick is reasonably wacky). Fridays and Saturdays are occasionally fun when challenging.
my most middle agèd crank opinion is that the NYT crossword has gotten too easy and not enough people are talking about it

I took a very vocational approach to my education (Computer Science + Economics) and took very few electives outside my majors. I've regretted that ever since, and have taken a variety of online classes to make up for that: Special Relativity, Egyptian History, Intro to Mathematical Thinking.
The customer model presupposes they have complete preferences across all options already & are fully informed.
But education is premised upon NOT KNOWING a bunch of stuff! Students are served when new horizons are opened for them. Will every attempt work? No. But the world's impoverished without it

This is actually a good example of why the customer model is wrong.
I wouldn't have chosen poetry writing, but UNC made me take a class. And it absolutely made me become a much better writer, with an eye to concision and an ear now trained to the rhythm of words. I'm a better historian as a result.

I've always thought most all sports would be better if the participants had rifles strapped to their backs and periodically had to stop what they're doing and shoot at some targets. Marathon? Yes! Figure skating? You bet! Free style swimming? Sure, why not!

"build one to throw away" applies to so many things
my best code is written in a two-step process:
1. kludge a working prototype together, don’t worry about the code AT ALL. the point is understanding how the requirements function in reality
2. destroy the prototype completely. build the app for real using my better mental model

Genuine struggle to decide if I'm going to bother seeking out this game on fucking Amazon Prime. NBA has no idea the lasting damage they're doing by scattering the games. Also, we'll get another of those trashy court designs that burn the eyeballs and make watching the game a chore.

The concept of a syndicate is crucial. It's unclear why nobody (that I'm aware of) has tried it. I pay for several publications, but would gladly pay a bit more to have access to several newsletters.

Warriors need to quit with those Megatron passes to Jimmy. The look good/feel good when they work (as the passer, it feels great to loft it in there perfectly), but they become dumbass turnovers 50% of the time.
