Why can't people in power stop tormenting innocent people who are just going about their lives? At this point it feels like they're just doing this kind of thing because they can. This in no way helps anyone.

Came away from white elephant with the most on brand (for me) present ever. Drank from it while watching Dungeons & Dragons (2023). Not a holiday movie, but over the past 3 years it's become the one I watch while wrapping presents. Between its themes of found family and clever humor, it just fits.

You should all read this book by @scalzi.com. If you're an artist definitely check out chapter 23 (AKA "Day 23"). It's relatively self-contained (assuming you know the book's irresistible premise) and is the perfect portrait of an aspiring writer.

If passed, this is government-mandated extermination.
Tomorrow, the House of Representatives will vote on a bill that bans gender-affirming medical care for any transgender person under 18, and threatens any medical professional providing this care to youth with 10 years in prison.

Tell Congress to protect trans youth and vote NO.

Between the cold and the lack of light during the winter, it's the lack of light that really gets to me. To be honest I like the cold (to a limited extent). At least I'll like the cold until mid-February when I'll be like: is it springtime yet? But the lack of daylight REALLY gets under my skin.

First 1/2 of my interview with Instant Ink Comic Book Podcast!
It was lots of fun. Basically they provide a prompt and we work together to create a one-page comic while chatting about art, life and everything else.

I've heard of at least one case where someone murdered in a mass shooting had survived a previous mass shooting. We are decades beyond where we should have been doing more to stop this.
i don't think this is even a real statistical anomaly anymore. it seems like there's someone in the crowd at every mass shooting who has been through it before. this doesn't have to be our shared cultural experience.

#writingtips from notes I have taken over the years: Your characters should care about something (even if they pretend they don't) and then that thing should be threatened to be taken way.

During the month of December I'm taking a break from my current writing project to let it rest in my brain.
Sort of working on a new project. Not even an outline, just spending some time every day jotting down ideas. Don't know if this will turn out to be one idea or several.

What I love about reading is the autonomy. I can engage in whatever content I want, yes-- but more importantly, I can have whatever relationship I want with that content. I can be swept away, I can be distantly observing, I can be in a tug of war with the text. It's playful and free.
It doesn't take a lot for people to start reading. But year after year, what keeps you coming back? In this week's Mark As Read, @mollytempleton.com discusses reading as a lifelong habit:

seeing a lot of author-targeting scams in email lately about "sharing your book"

a few are particularly insidious, saying "An honest note from someone who just finished your book" and "I just finished reading one of your books, and I have to say—I’m genuinely blown away."
