When I was in school, my English teacher told me that I would never be a published author. Well, 25 years later, and after dozens of drafts, re-writes, and rejection letters from publishing houses, I'm happy to announce that that teacher has finally died.

Incidentally, I’ve been chafing a bit at the “No Kings” thing, because there are loads of monarchies that have more limits on executive power than the US does, but it has the great advantage that it makes Americans who want to oppose it sound, well, unamerican….

one of the reasons they're so mad at "no kings" is that they thought they were going to get a different kind of protest. they *want* the black bloc to be out there fighting with the cops. those are the images they've been trying to generate from "go." instead--

Do NOT use vanilla in place of sherry! I just made this exactly as written and used vanilla since I didn't have sherry. It is now down the disposal. The smell alone was a huge indicator of what it would taste like. Whoever thought of vanilla with meat? Nasty.

In a landmark public health achievement, WHO has validated the Maldives for eliminating mother-to-child transmission (EMTCT) of hepatitis B, while maintaining its earlier validation (in 2019) for EMTCT of HIV and syphilis. This makes the Maldives the first country in the world to achieve ‘triple elimination’.

I'm watching Triumph of the Will (1935) because I haven't seen it in a long time and people are insisting to me that you have to admit it's a good movie.

It's not a good movie. The idea that it has any value, even technically, is literally Nazi propaganda that's just endured.

What Trump is doing is very bad. But I want to push back against some of the numbers here.

ICE did not hire 10,000 agents. It WANTS to. That it keeps running ads suggests it is struggling. And when it does, it seems to cannibalize local police, who don't like that.

This is why I get so exasperated when people suggest SF written 50+ years ago as the place for new readers of the genre, especially young readers, to start with. There is SO MUCH that will throw them out of the work, from outdated tech to outdated social structures. They'll leave and not come back.
