For over a year now I’ve worked so hard and tried everything I could to avoid this. But I couldn’t save enough, so here we are.

I made a Gofundme. Depending on the outcome I will either hire an expensive immigration lawyer and give it one more try, or pack up and use the money to start over.

“Could it be that a scholar is given the benefit of the doubt so long as he does not have the presumption to write well?”

This sounds 100% like something I would write but it’s Walter Kaufmann

The first post I saw this morning was someone using the term “logical fallacy” completely wrong and I chose to ignore it.

Crystal Waters should be New York’s next city council speaker. She’s been advocating for the homeless since the 1990s.

While compliments can certainly be flattering and fun to receive, men’s general sense that they are giving you a gift or doing you a favor by giving you a compliment is deeply misguided.

Some Karen decides they don’t like the look of someone at a store and next thing you know that person is disappeared by the government.

This is evil and it is not a tenable way for a society to function.
At least 15 people have been taken into federal immigration custody this year after Cheektowaga police called Border Patrol, according to documents obtained by @nysfocus.bsky.social. Five of the arrests started with a call to police by Macy’s security guards.
How a Brush With Mall Security Can Lead to Arrest by Border Patrol
In at least one case, police may have violated a state court ruling prohibiting local law enforcement from conducting civil immigration enforcement.

It is categorically wrong to detail and imprison people without due process.

It is categorically wrong to hold human beings in overcrowded cells with inadequate food, ventilation, bathroom facilities, and medical attention.

It does not matter what think those people did or did not do.
This is the scandal. Trump isn’t targeting dangerous people. He’s targeting peaceful immigrants. Almost exclusively.

This is unfortunately now true for most creatives in most fields. Musicians, actors, writers. People who have achieved remarkable success in their fields - sold out tours, awards, charts - are working day jobs. It’s honestly depressing as shit.

Candace fucking Bushnell made $4 a word in the 1990s.
almost every novelist you read who's not from the airport fiction or bestseller sections is working a full on day job, including multi-award winners and absolute legends, or they have a spouse or trust that supports them. virtually across the board. just normalize in your mind that's how it works.
I know we know this, but authors need to get better at talking about how they actually make their money. Stop pretending it's from the books.

When I was growing up my dad’s parents had a TV from the early 1970s with TWIST DIALS and no remote. You had to get up to change the channel. It worked perfectly otherwise.

In maybe 1997 or so my dad and uncle FINALLY convinced them to throw it out and get a TV with a remote.

How would you say universities like Emory fit into that infrastructure?
The fight against surveillance must include infrastructure that enables it. We can’t just oppose collection we must also fight storage, analysis, corporate relationships…

As someone writing a book on the history of government data storage and its harms, I’ll say that people in the past knew this!
