it is wild the way he talks about RFK Jr, a man who would cause the deaths of thousands or more if he got his way completely

I just want to share the thread below, for anyone who hasn't seen it. The south scores highest on racial resentment, but it decreases with the younger generations.

And Millennials + Gen Z will be 54% of eligible voters by 2028. Just something positive to keep in mind on this topic.
Those claiming Dems should retreat on racial justice aren't hard-headed realists, they're pushing against the electoral tide rather than leaning into it. The story of Gen Z isn't about racist backlash or red-pilled young men. It's the most racially progressive generation in American history. 🧵

Libertarianism invariably boils down to some combination of:
1) Assume a strong theory of property, 2) assume a distribution of all existing property
3) declare that any derogation from those (1) and (2) is violence
4) pedophilia

“I don’t answer those questions anymore.”

I must admit, I've never asked the abolitionists I know what their plan is because we're always too busy trying to materially mitigate the suffering of people in the current condition. I got the impression it was mostly about dismantling the incarceration state by alleviating poverty and corruption.

Now that you put it that way, it’s super annoying how many people’s politics ultimately boil down to “idk, if we can just get rid of the bad people, I’m sure it’ll work out”. We gotta transcend this somehow someday

Ironically my furtherest right opinion is “we need prisons and some people need to be in them”

Also “the current system works badly“ is not actually an answer to “how would an alternative system work AT ALL”

john pfaff thinks it's counterintuitively easier to reform private prisons, i haven't read his book tho. i think he did a thread on it

On the Internet, the worst thing you can for is reform. Right or left, it’s gotta be abolition or revolution or overthrow or something more based. Reform though? What are you, somebody’s mom or something? (Ew.)

I have of late started identifying as an American prison abolitionist. Our specific prisons need to be abolished. That doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be replaced with like, Norwegian prisons.

There are serious proposals for abolishing or dramatically reducing the use of prisons but they involve things like corporal punishment and/or house arrest with extensive surveillance that I don't think would satisfy the abolitionists

“Read theory.” The closest Angela Davis comes to talking about an alternative in her book, Are Prisons Obsolete, is talking about how a white American forgave a Black South African man for killing their daughter during riots immediately prior to the fall of apartheid

The rhetorical move of the midwit abolitionists will be, you just haven’t read theory. I’ve read theory. This is explicit in Mariame Kaaba’s work. it’s all over the anarchist zines you love. The theorists who won’t go there still will not present an alternative that isn’t prison by another name.

This is further complicated by the fact that you now have to separate right-wingers in the US by "sociopathic opportunist" or "dim true believer", with a third axis of "grifter" ever present.
