TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
"This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".

“We do not buy bananas, toilet paper, nappies – we buy asphalt, steel and concrete … those inflationary increases and those specific projects don’t always, don’t always align with what we see with normal household CPI.”

- Rehette Stoltz, Gisborne Mayor and LGNZ vice-president.
Simon says cap your rates – how will councils respond?
The Govt says councils must live within their means – but overseas evidence on rate caps is mixed, while local authorities fear a loss of 'critical investment' in infrastructure

The defense team presses Lairmore on whether the sandwich really 'exploded.' They return to the photo of the sandwich and wrapper on the ground.

"That sandwich hasn't exploded at all, has it?" defense asks.

"It looks like a little bit is coming out towards the bottom," Lairmore replies.

Joy. That's what is missing way too often from the current discourse on learning and education. I don't mean being overtly happy all the time, nor having endless fun at school (as if!), but an underlying belief that learning can be a joyful, engaging process, not just stuffing more into your memory.
