the way my focus on scholarship (inadvertently) shifted when i lost direct access to certain academic journals and conference proceedings totally snuck up on me

i still read freely available papers & stuff, but one day i realized i completely lost track of some venues where i used to be more active
it would be great if someone could give me visiting research access at a university so I could read academic papers for less than $49 per page.

Unions nationwide need to urgently move towards a general strike to shut everything down.
Let’s be clear: ICE injured and detained the president of SEIU California for peacefully observing.

ICE picked the wrong side. The wrong state. The wrong person. and the wrong union. David Huerta stood up. And now 750,000 SEIU workers are standing up behind him.

SEIU California | SEIU California President David Huerta Injured, Detained at ICE Raid in Los Angeles
We are proud of President Huerta’s righteous participation as a community observer, in keeping with his long history of advocating for immigrant workers and with the highest values of our movement…

Yeah idk tanks down the middle of the street sounds pretty "american" to me. Like, wtf do people think this country even is?
This is so jarringly unAmerican that I sort of hope it wakes some normies up. It is occurring in a context where military-style equipment is being used to enforce immigration roundups and conveys the notion that we are increasingly living in a police state.
In preparation for next week’s parade/demonstration, tanks are being moved into Washington, DC today. Unprecedented.

And then sometimes you have nights like tonight where you make something so fucking good and you eat it and there is no better feeling in the world.
Cooking as a single person is truly the most overrated skill, even if you have the time. You can spend a couple hours busting ass to make an awesome meal but in the end you're too stressed out, dirty, sweaty and pissed off to enjoy it. I'd get take out everyday if I could afford it.

I don't really think this is it at all. A lot of times in the past couples simply didn't talk about politics. Slowly over time, many previously "apolitical" women realized they were married to right wing sociopaths. It's a big factor in why my boomer parents marriage disintegrated.
this post is generating a lot of debate over on the everything app but in my experience it just isn't true that this is a new phenomenon. people have always looked to date someone with similar values.

This is giving me life. It was my theory for why Leiter didn’t dissemble and I’m glad to see it confirmed (and articulated properly)

Oddly, none of those insisting it’s Jew hate rather than anti-Israel seem to mention how lucky we are that he didn’t kill someone innocent.

Worth noting, the Palestinian village of Bruqin is directly adjacent to the Israeli settlement of Brukhin, established in 1998. It's very likely the settlers attacking Bruqin are from Brukhin.

I don't know why the settlers "borrowed" the pre-existing name, but this isn't unique in the West Bank.
West Bank settler gangs are currently carrying out a pogrom in the town of Bruqin, burning Palestinian homes and cars.

In the words of Israeli media, “currently no arrests have been made”.

Yes it’s tragic that a young man’s life has been derailed by this. Do we want them not thinking that even when it’s true? What if non violent protests get attention but don’t change anything? At what point is violence justified?

(If one weren’t an absolute pacifist, which I am)
Deeply saddened by the Israeli Embassy staff deaths.

I'm reminded of Matt Nelson, who despaired about Gaza and self-immolated in Boston last fall. The press barely covered it.

Non-violent protests deserve attention. When people are despairing, we don't want them thinking non-violence is futile.
