In 2020 @wwf.panda.org identified the 100 global cities expected to suffer the greatest rise in water risk by 2050- home to at least 350 million people!

We've already seen several megacities just days away from running dry.

I was shocked when I first saw these results from standard climate models used in IPCC reports: for high emissions, the Atlantic overturning circulation #AMOC shuts down in all 9 models that ran past 2100, and is well on the way to shutdown by 2100.
Our paper on that is out today.🧵

Seither wurden mehrere Bergdörfer in FR & IT teils zerstört. 🧵 www.fr.de/panorama/unw...

i've written a few essays now on the evolution of vernacular buildings as it becomes easier to transport materials and i really think we're on the cusp of another shift: where the cost of transport is measured not in pounds but in emissions. another point for building local

This is an excellent exchange between various scientist on the matter of how LLMs (and to some degree other ML systems) should be incorportated in the scientific process.

Strongly recommended reading.
An LLM "creates textual claims, and then predicts the citations that might be associated with similar text. Obviously, this practice violates all norms of scholarly citation.

At best, LLMs gesticulate toward the shoulders of giants."

Bender, West, and I contributed to this pro/con piece in PNAS.
