Hello fellow social platform refugees. I'm a children's book author-illustrator with a deep love of science and history and people in cafes and bars whispering the resistance into life.

Photo by Pierre Lavie. Yes this is me. And I threw my Leica. It landed on the bass plate with hardly a scratch. Another Photographer grabbed it along with my phone and I was able to track him later. I was held face down tear gas deployed right in front of me and pepper sprayed directly into the eye.

I don’t think people quite understand that the occupation by ICE in the Twin Cities has more or less erased non-white people from public life. They cannot safely exist in any space accessible to the public and moving between private places leaves folks vulnerable to kidnapping by armed masked goons.

It's been a horrifying run for humanity and I've struggled for years with how to react. How can I drop kids' art into social feeds sharing nonstop updates about the unrelenting heinous acts of powerful people?

I've thinking about things all wrong.

Stay tuned for a series of parables.

I lived in America for 40+ years, so I know first-hand what happens when government serves only oligarchs and frustrated citizens turn their anger on the wrong people. There is a better way forward than the horrific US model. The Greens offer that path through empathetic, non-corporate leadership.
Trump started it.

Reform and Tories are at it too.

And Labour already heading in that direction.

All cruel, potentially deadly and does nothing to fix the cost of living crisis.

You and your wife drop your 6-year-old off at school. You just moved here. You see ICE terrorizing your new neighbors. You film them, as is your legal right. Your wife complies with orders. She is then shot in the head. You still have to pick up your child later today.

This could be you.

Renee Nicole Good, murdered by ICE, was a prize-winning poet. Here’s that poem.
Renee Nicole Good, 37, mother to a six-year-old boy, was murdered earlier today by an ICE agent in Minneapolis, a few blocks from her home. According to the Minnesota Star Tribune: [An ICE agent] s…

I've watched thousands of videos from the Jan. 6 riot as part of NPR's reporting and archive project on that day.

Here are some of the lesser known videos that have really stuck with me.

Going to say it again; unless you live in the middle of nowhere or otherwise have ZERO other options to acquire necessities, there is not a single good reason to support Amazon. In fact, it's morally wrong to use Amazon.
I just found out that our stuff is being sold on Amazon - WITHOUT our consent or any ability to opt out bc Amazon is just scraping artist’s websites and putting our shit in their search results. Again, without our permission.

A 10 minute walk from my last Chicago home. When ICE has been put down and disbanded there must be arrests, there must be trials, and there must be justice. Everyone involved, from the thugs on the ground to those at the very top.

You do you, of course, but I imagine there's at least one independent or at least alternate coffee shop in your neck of the woods. Time to let Starbucks die.
BREAKING: Starbucks just announced a $1 billion restructuring and will close 59 unionized stores — nearly 10% of union locations.

It includes the Roastery in Seattle, one of its busiest shops.

CEO Brian Niccol made $100 million in four months last year.

Many have been wondering what 1 person can do to reverse the seemingly overwhelming tide of authoritarianism. The cowards at Disney just gave us an opportunity.

As an illustrator, I'll miss the original 101 Dalmatians. As a writer, Andor. It may seem silly, but we can't let this moment pass.

This is the playbook, folks.

If you're not paying attention now and doing something about it, then you're going to have to sit down the rest of your life because democracy is being taken away.

Do not be quiet in this moment.

Freelance illustration gigs drying up. Ad agencies using Midjourney instead of hiring human artists. Costume design turned over to AI wholesale. Good work vanishing.

These are the stories of working visual artists, who describe losing jobs, wages, and hope as their clients and bosses embrace AI.

Visual artists, illustrators and graphic designers share their stories about how AI is being used to lower wages, degrade work and even replace it altogether, in this installment of AI Killed My Job.
