This gave me an idea. If LLM can truly reason, someone should be able to train one on only texts preceding a major scientific discovery, then have the LLM reason the rest. No need to speculate on if LLMs are capable of novel discoveries. Test them on existing ones.

apropos of a comment this morning, the concept of being "within walking distance" is an interesting one. My mother's walking distance these days is in the order of tens of feet. In her 70s my grandmother carried home a christmas turkey from the butchers a distance in the order of thousands of feet.
