Odd that he doesn’t like Philip Glass considering how much he likes repeating himself.

Narrative obligation to buy more cool jackets
we're getting all the downsides of cyberpunk (social alienation, ruthless hyper capitalism, digital mass surveillance state) but none of the promised upsides (cheap street food, cool jackets, super drugs that make you really fast and strong before they kill you)

In April 2024, Spotify implemented a new scheme: songs with less than 1k streams per year would no longer receive royalties.

The data for 2025 was just released via Luminate, and 88% of songs have been demonetized.

Read it again: 88% of songs on Spotify have been demonetized.

Still documenting things from my SLV residency. I'm adding a few general tools & techniques to the GLAM Workbench, for example, here's a notebook about getting structured data from the SLV catalogue via an item's MARC record. https://glam-workbench.net/state-library-victoria/get_marc_data/
Access MARC data describing an item in the SLV catalogue - GLAM Workbench
If you have an item's Alma identifier, you can retrieve structured metadata describing the item from the SLV catalogue in a couple of ways. One approach is to download a text representation of the item's MARC record and extract data from it. This notebook provides some examples of how you can do this.

For people who don't use screen readers, it can be difficult to understand how screen readers work. If you're interested in learning how people use screen readers, check out this demo from Marc Sutton and The University of California San Francisco.

I saw a post the other day that noted that one of the notable things about genAI content is that the only person ever interested in the output is the one who asked for it. No one else wants to read AI books or look at AI 'art' in preference to the human-made alternative.

Alt text always depends on context. Imagine an icon of a computer printer. It could be used on a page of free icons. It could be on a school's computer lab site. Or it could be part of a button that allows you to print the current page. In each instance, the same icon would need different alt text.

SLV is a beautiful, useful and very busy research space, and I use it regularly. I hope that they rethink these cuts & recognise that the library is so much more than a tourist destination.
The State Library of Victoria’s ‘major’ proposed cuts include slashing the number of reference librarians and free computers for public access. Some staff are shocked.

I've visited the SLV many times in the last few months to view some magazine collections. It's always packed. It makes no sense they'd cut services. Only people left will be security.

Wendy Carlos, BOTD in 1939, worked closely with Robert Moog in developing many of the modules and features of early Moog synthesizers in the 1960s.
Here, in 1970, Carlos shares the clearest and most easy to understand explanation of how a synthesizer works that you'll ever hear:
