Facts & strategy, in an authoritarian takeover.
Rightwing billionaires want to privatize NIH and use it to control universities.

We work to cure diseases like cancer.

Who’s putting it at risk, @sfn.org ?

This passive voice stuff has got to stop. We have to name the people destroying US leadership in science.
(Hint: Trump. Vought. Bhattacharya. RFK. Say their names.)
"The U.S. has been a world leader in research for decades, and that leadership position is now at risk," said SfN President John H. Morrison in a new NPR article.

Nuzzi's fawning coverage of the sociopathic conspiracy crank she was having an affair with aided his rise to political power, which he is using to perpetrate the worst intentional public health catastrophe of our unnecessarily shortened lifetimes, and THAT is the STORY.

Cannot believe it’s 10 years after 2015, Jeffrey Epstein was arrested (twice?), let off the hook by a Trump I cabinet secretary, died in jail, Merrick Garland had access to all these docs and emails and… IT’S TAKEN TEN YEARS TO COME OUT.

We have a crisis of elite accountability.
I just don’t see how we can pretend even for a moment that anything involving our federal government is remotely normal when the president is covering up his involvement in a child sex trafficking ring. Like, what are we doing here

Can confirm. I am okay and more motivated than ever to speak up.

Nothing scares this administration more. Their power lies in our silence.
NIH program officer @jenna-m-norton.bsky.social has been placed on admin leave, sources say.

Norton has been outspoken about the Trump administration's dismantling of science, and she signed the Bethesda Declaration.

Bhattacharya has said that "science is dead without free speech".

NEW: Jenna Norton, an NIH employee who is openly critical of Trump & RFK Jr, has been put on "non-disciplinary" administrative leave. She says the administration is trying to "scare and silence me." An HHS official, asked to comment, called her a radical leftist.

A bad thing is unfolding at NIH this week: It looks like the Trump administration is trying to replace key civil servant scientific leaders, the Institute Directors, with political hires. These directors control the NIH budget, tens of billions.

I wonder if the United States can learn anything from the last time a major industrialized country decided to isolate itself from the rest of the world?

Almost a decade after the Brexit vote, GDP in the UK is around 6-8% lower relative to peer countries. (Source: www.nber.org/papers/w34459)

I make my statement in my personal capacity at 4:30. It frightens me that health policy and health systems are not priorities when we told our leaders we need a fighting CR to keep the ACA afloat. #hspr #hpsr #hpss #shutdown

Nevermind the administration disappearing people off the streets or murdering Caribbean fishermen or shutting down agencies illegally or declaring war on trans people or openly accepting bribes, Dems picked a fight on health care and couldn't even find the spine for that," the NOAA employee said

The problem with this is that it has no theory of power.

All of us want things. We want healthcare that works for everyone. We want Stephen Miller and Elon Musk in prison.

But what distinguishes “want” from reality is a plan to use power to get us there. If Shaheen is folding, she has no plan.
Shaheen: So let me be clear. No one in the senate chamber wants to extend the ACA tax credits more than I do.

Look this thread is cautious and that’s fine.

But multiple people here including @ezralevin.bsky.social are reporting based on sources (inside the Senate Dems) that this is going to be a bad deal- a collapse. So we should assume it’s a bad deal
Again, there's really more here we don't know than what we do know. Including, apparently, whether they even have this much done. (I'm seeing "Senate stands in recess until 6:00 PM). And to be clear...
November 9, 2025 at 10:39 PM
This is a strong sign that the deal is bad - or that House Dems have serious worries that their Senate counterparts are going to vote for a bad deal
note that D House members appear to be kind of going apeshit. they don't know what the deal is either, but are trying to influence it, probably. (as they should.)

So it turns out... the US air travel system was incredibly, deeply dependent on federal funding to just run day-to-day all this time, to the benefit of private airline shareholders, when everyone thinks that state-run trains are leeching off the government. Weird!

This is a good analysis of what Democrats can do now. In short: don't cave. But if they do cave, do it for a plan to reopen the government with teeth to stop the lawbreaking by Vought and Trump.

And that’s why we here see a Court that can suddenly use normal logic and perceive the consequences of its own actions.

Meaning they know *exactly* what they're doing when they allow Trump and Vought to destroy NIH, and thus destroy most or all US cancer research. /end

Here in the DMV, us NIH people watched the Washington Post venerate Youngkin, and then watched Youngkin’s approval bomb when he got into office and voters figured out what he actually stood for. It’s not unlike the Trump story — in 2024 and last night — actually.
i wouldn't be a total glenn youngkin hater if i didn't mention that the results tonight mean that his total tenure amounted to presiding over the destruction — at least for the next few years — of the virginia republican party. lmao.
