Starting to think that the President going completely mad might force his party to act next year.

He's always said crazy things but he's moved to another, and more politically dangerous, level recently.

“He said, ‘I’m going to die – please see my family [and tell them] that I went down to save people’s lives’,” Alkanj recounted, before Ahmed tackled the shooter, taking his rifle.

this guy, honestly. amazing.
Ahmed al Ahmed, the man who tackled one of the Bondi killers, became an Australian citizen 3 years ago.

His deed was "his way of conveying his gratitude for staying in Australia, for being granted citizenship."

He took 5 bullets, and fears he'll lose his left arm.

the proximate reason i post here — beyond the fact that i like a lot of you and enjoy reading your thoughts and jokes and observations — is that this is a non-algorithmic platform where people share lots of stuff and people read what is shared. that's still valuable even if it doesn't "influence!"

If Merz can deliver on both the frozen assets loan and the Mercosur deal, this will be the best week for his (now rather frayed) “Germany is back” narrative since the debt brake vote in mid-March.
Often, Berlin is the main veto player when it comes to decisive EU action. But this week, for once, Berlin is a key driver of getting both the reparations loan and Mercosur over the finish line.

This time, the EU's ability to act act fully hinges on Rome's and Paris's will to jump.

“…more people stayed home (41%) than voted for the winning Labour party (34%). These figures also don’t take account of the 8.2mil. people who are entitled to vote but aren’t registered to do so. Shockingly, only 1 in 5 eligible voters voted for the party that was swept into gov’t with a landslide…”

Also note that NHS stats like A&E and Ambulance waits are lower than same time 3 years ago, even with earlier flu wave.

A reminder, following the conviction of Jimmy Lai, that two senior British lawyers—a former Law Lord and a former Supreme Court President—continue to lend respectability to the Hong Kong legal system by sitting as non-permanent judges on its highest court.

I've written for Psyche about some of the extraordinary things institutional trust enables us to do, and why we have to live with the fact that big organisations screw up.
Modern life relies on trust in civic institutions. Through a historical lens, this Idea looks back at the vast benefits trust once delivered, traces how scepticism has grown and touches on ways we might restore trust while retaining healthy scepticism @rostaylor.bsky.social
We’re losing trust in civic institutions – can we get it back? | Psyche Ideas
Historically, trust in institutions freed us to do extraordinary things. They can be flawed, but we lose them at our peril

This is old but feels relevant again: people can use social media in whatever way they like, stop complaining that they're doing it wrong.

A thread worth your time:
Few thoughts on the "Polish exodus" from the UK.

1. It's not an 'exodus', it's a slow drip. We're fine, thanks.
2. Migration is really complicated.
3. The absolute cheek of the very same media attacking Poles for years lamenting their departure.
4. What you can do?
