I learned something new today: 2D distance vs 3D distance. I record hikes with a Garmin Venu 2+. It measures distance and ascent, but distance is just measured between GPS points, as if on flat terrain, understating the actual distance hiked. Did you know that? Time to upgrade to Fenix 8. #hiking

Upgraded my sleeping pad. REI's anniversary sale paired with the gift card I received from my kids for my birthday pushed me over the top on pulling the trigger on a Nemo Tensor all season ultralight pad. Shaving 16oz off my pack weight.

A few pics from an overnight backpacking hike on the lower Deschutes River in Oregon this weekend.
It's an amazingly beautiful place that runs up to the Pali Coast on the north side of the island of Kauai with a state campground nearby.
I didn't have the opportunity to do any hiking during the limited time I was there, but I vowed to hike a bit on my next visit to the island.

This was an interesting read on the adventure tourism industry in Egypt, specifically #hiking the Sinai and Red Sea long distance trails.
@MiddleEastEye: The crackdown on hiking tourism comes as the tourism ministry works to double the number of tourists in the country from 15.7 million in 2024 to some 25 to 30 million by 2028
