Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

The internet is being scrubbed to remove any contribution from women in STEM (and this makes me very angry...) but, you can still download volume 1 and 2 of the amazing “first woman” graphic novel on other sites.

You Can Still Read NASA's Deleted "First Woman" Graphic Novels (Update)
in 2021 NASA issued the first of two interactive comic books/graphic novels] depicting young women dreaming of - and then training for - a future that would comprise the so-called "Artemis Generation."

Don't pick a fight with @dieworkwear.bsky.social !
Or maybe encourage someone you don't like to do it.
Great education for all of us!
Not true. I'll give you some examples of when styles crossed over from womenswear to menswear, and how men have worn straight-up womenswear or just feminine styles in cool ways. 🧵

Trying very hard to think of real world utility.
For anybody who has booked an airline ticket or ordered groceries know that there are a lot of decision points and also the web is fragile. Without exception and error handling how useful is this ? Other than being a pretty demo what is the point?

They wish to be visibly cruel because it makes them feel big and strong.

Block them with the most powerful block button we've had on social media to save yourself the energy, and save others from the garage being spread
Just be prepared. We've all seen that headline going around today that Bluesky is the current #1 app, and X dropped out of the top 25.

That means the absolute worst people in the world are going to be coming here trying to turn THIS place into just as much of a shithole. Block them. Don't engage.

Can't say it better. This is what I want Bluesky to be.
Bluesky doesn't need to be huge to be successful.

It can be of modest size and still be successful, it doesn't need to replace Twitter it just needs to be good and a healthier space for you to exist in that you self curate

The big deal about DeepSeek v3 is not the size of the model, or its rating on the rankings leaderboard.
It's the fact that it $6M to build on just 2048 older gen GPU's.
I haven't seen such a rapid decline in price points in any technology ever.

DeepSeek is better than 4o on most benchmarks at 10% of the price?

Time to revisit our extraction pipeline!
I'll get straight to the point.

We trained 2 new models. Like BERT, but modern. ModernBERT.

Not some hypey GenAI thing, but a proper workhorse model, for retrieval, classification, etc. Real practical stuff.

It's much faster, more accurate, longer context, and more useful. 🧵

To folks worried about bluesky being a progressive-only platform, an echo chamber, left vs right divide. Let's avoid dichotomies and sorting into binary groups. For example, a lot of us got tired of doing Open Source in the middle of a global town square that encourages screaming and promotes rage.

The only purpose NYT connections serves is to give people a chance to vent their frustration at the ridiculous grouping logic.

This is our pipeline for processing email data for RAG.
Step 1 : Extract text and attachments from a PST file and create a record for each email in MongoDB.
Metadata in separate fields like sender, receiver and timestamp.
We use a fileserver that associates a token for each attachment.

Having seen Java dev and then JavaScript, I have always been wary of Typescript.
Nice to see my assessment being echoed by experienced devs.
I believe that the fear of no strict typing has been over hyped.
JS without types works fine. Use TS if it works for you but don't claim that it's superior.
I’ve spent some time on a TypeScript-first codebase this week¹.

I’ve now spent more time fighting against TS than writing out logic. I.e. I would have been 2x as productive without it.

Out of all these warnings, how many actually helped me fix real bugs? 0.

¹ I prefer JSDoc w/ TS imports myself.

Just noticed that there are hardly any hashtags in my feed.
Is it something that people have unconsciously given up on?
Feels good actually and I hope the trend continues.

We are building a RAG/Agent solution for one of our clients. We use their mailboxes and online sources to generate data for the local LLM to consume.
While there are a lot of tools that do this, what we have realised is we need to focus on the data structures and algorithms (1/2).

Google has put Gemini into the messages app. The only thing people use the messages app in India is for receiving OTPs and bank notifications.
Like Meta pushing AI in WhatsApp, I think they are pushing it out as they don't know what to do with the tech. The spend has to be justified I guess.

NotebookLM is addictive. Putting long blog posts and Arxiv.org papers through it and getting a nice summary. Less open tabs in Chrome and less guilt of not following up.👍

With the current influx of new users, it feels important to reshare this critical information

Engaging with toxic posts, even if it’s to rebut or mock them, is still a form of amplification

We need to go back to the basics of the early Internet: Don’t feed the trolls (and the grifters)

#SocialWeb
I'd second this, fwiw. Every expert analysis I've seen of how toxicity spreads on X notes that any engagement with the toxin, even as rebuttal, ridicule, pillory, is just a variant of amplification. Block the bad, share the good is what works.
Remember: Bluesky is not Xitter!

The goal is to build something better

One key thing to do is "block and don’t interact"

Don’t quote post dumb posts

Don’t reply to bad actors, trolls, reply guys, and extremists

Just block them

Life is too short to be wasted on idiocy and toxicity

I'm collecting migration stories for a blog post. Would you reply with your thoughts? Why are you here? Do you feel bluesky could one day replace X? Or what do you enjoy, is missing, or you would prefer to change? And if you've posted about this before or read a good one, would you link to it? 🙏

Loving the vibe at Bluesky.
Reminds me of twitter from a decade ago.
Encouraged enough to start posting again, rather than just lurking around.
