"Just like the first woman in a lab […] meant representation for future women in science, an autistic Barbie where there had been no autistic dolls before can mean a lot to Barbie-interested autistic people." @ejwillingham.bsky.social in the latest TPGA newsletter:

Autistic Barbie met with joy, controversy
Do all autistic people interested in Barbie look like this doll or wear headphones or use an AAC device? No. But it is an important social statement on a global stage.

New — I wrote about ChongLy Scott Thao, the elderly Hmong American wrongly arrested and forced out of his home by ICE in his underwear during the punishing Minnesota winter, what witnesses saw, and DHS's racist claim that he fit the description of another Asian man they were looking for.

My story:
Behind the disturbing image of ICE snatching a half-naked, elderly Hmong American from his home
DHS has claimed without evidence that they were looking for someone else when they took ChongLy Scott Thao.

This is horrific. By the state incarcerating them, they are assuming in loco parentis, and we are all horrified any time a caregiver forces someone into isolation. I hope justice is speedy for them and that these dear children receive the care they need to overcome this avoidable trauma.
Disgusting report on incarcerated children and youth kept in conditions including extended solitary confinement; housing without toilets and other basic sanitation; limited access to food, water, and sunlight; and deprivation of educational opportunities.

There is a solidarity fund to cover legal representation for people who are detained, volunteers who watch over students and their families during school drop off and pick up, networks to bring food and other necessities to people afraid to leave their homes, industry-specific workplace trainings for employers and employees on their rights if federal agents arrive, and protests.

This is arguably a blueprint for how Black people should engage with the current moment if you ask me. We should allow our survival to inspire community, art, and intellectual thought that expands what opportunity is for us even amidst the chaos. #blacksky
Just finished this right after having read @hofrench.bsky.social's Second Emancipation, and it convinced me that the African & African diaspora anti-colonial thinkers of the 1940-1975 period constituted one of the great intellectual movements in the history of humankind.

Second Enlightenment level.
We think of the postwar world order as having been built by the US. But as Getachew makes clear, that world order was completed by the intellectual giants of the African, pan-African and African diaspora liberation movements.

It is no coincidence Trump & Miller are targeting its fundamental tenet.

Many of my most favorite things share one trait: they’re easily underestimated.

Minneapolis may take the stereotypes on the chin, but that doesn’t mean they’re willing to conform to them.
ICE and MAGA really did bet the farm on all of Minneapolis’s white people going “oh yes, please take away our disgusting, evil non-white-foreigner neighbors, oh thank you so much.”

it’s beautiful that they’ve been proven incredibly wrong about that - may the rest of the country do the same.

The reality is that most men will only commit public violence in extremely specific scenarios and ICE Watch disrupts the conditions necessary for escalation.
Opinion | I'm a Minneapolis sociologist who studies violence. Here's how ICE observers are helping.
Research into how violence occurs shows that disapproval from the people around you can help reduce it.
