If you're standing on a slippery surface wearing blades three millimetres thick, you're going to fall. What you're learning is the proper technique to fall. This way, you help avoid serious injury, and you orient yourself in the right position to get up quickly. What CanSkate classes don't teach you, however, is how to recover when you've fallen so far you can't even begin to figure out how to get back up. Exactly how far have I fallen? Two thousand, four hundred and forty-four kilometres from my hometown of Montreal according to the Maps app on my phone. Sitting on the couch of my best friend's apartment in Florida, waiting to hear back about my audition for the skating show she's been begging me to join for the past year. Spite fueled me to work on my debut novel, where I poured in all the fury, anger, sadness, confusion, rage and pain that I started feeling at 14 after I bled for the first time and began experiencing period shame, stigmatization, gaslighting and more.
