NEW: Over 50,000 people attempted to block the founding convention for the new youth org of the far-right AfD party on Nov. 29 in Gießen, Germany. Wide-ranging actions-including 19 blockades around the small city-prevented a majority of participants from attending. Police violently beat blockaders.

It isn't only immediate personal cognitive effort, once you get to the scale of movements the cost of transmitting complex ideas starts to compound. It is quantifiably harder to build a movement around complex ideas than it is to build one around simplistic bullshit.

Arktos Press is one of several nodes in the international fascist lit movement--even its name is based on Nazi occultist/esoteric polar myths about a mystical 'Hyperborea'. It is extremely overtly fascist and neo-Nazi (e.g. publishes Benoist, Evola, Dugin, Spengler, Lynn, etc.)
I know things are bad, but I was honestly somehow surprised to see that the books of the racist, fascist Arktos Press are available free with a Kindle Unlimited subscription

There's something deeply funny about everyone, from "anti-cancel-culture leftists" up to and including sitting GOP politicians and the Christian right, who are only too happy to collaborate with these people because they consider them to be the "moderate" and "reasonable" leftists.
I know we're all focusing on the chat gpt thing but this is an absolutely insane way for the observer and also glinner to refer to an ecofacsist who believes that trans people were invented by jews to eliminate humanity and that mass bombing campaigns should happen for the enviroment.

NEW: When Propecy Fails is one of the most famous social psychology books of all time, a look at a small group of UFO believers when the “spacemen” failed to land. I wrote about a new study from an independent researcher who says the book is not what it seems. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...
It’s one of the most influential social psychology studies ever. Was it all a lie?
A classic book on UFO believers and their "cognitive dissonance" after aliens failed to land is called into question.

the parts of our evolved cognitive architecture -- and some individuals' personalities in particular -- that contribute to classical forms of magical thinking do not simply evaporate when religious identity does, even if norms associated with some religious identities do facilitate magical thinking
a good bit of the pathology attributed to 'religion' in the abstract is basically pathology associated with the psychology of social identity processes and the evolved psychology of coalitions; religion is a social identity & a basis for coalitions but it is hardly the only one
The decline of religion as a source of meaning in people's lives remains underrated as a factor shaping society. The need doesn't go away - they just seek it out elsewhere in (often false) health/wellness beliefs, (often highly polarized/conflictual) politics, etc. www.nytimes.com/2025/11/25/o...

What it's strange that everyone commenting on this seems to miss is that this obsession of Thiel is a direct response to Bostrom's argument that we should stop technology (AI) by building a global totalitarian state.

Thiel is viewing the entire world through the lens of the rationalist civil war.
He claims the default political solution people have for existential risks is one world governance. Isn't that weird, how when we have global issues we think hey maybe some global cooperation would be the best way to address global issues. You want nuclear nonproliferation? Antichrist.
