lol I bring up in my book how confused I am by the popularity but seeming lack of social impact of Carol. Like, why is this socialist screed the most produced performance of all time in this Capitalist hellscape?!

I haven’t seen a ratio this pure since the before times.

Peter Thiel screaming crying throwing up reading this.
etvpod.bsky.social
The most trenchant philosophical critique ever drawn.
etvpod.bsky.social
I’m not! This looks predictably depressing tho.
etvpod.bsky.social
Just committing to the self-loathing authorial shtick. ☺️

Buckley really was such a special pleading douchebag. States rights to what my dude?! The fact that he’s still viewed as a peak of conservatism is such a bad sign.
etvpod.bsky.social
State schools are where it’s at.
etvpod.bsky.social
Yeah I still think he’s one of the most postmodern thinkers to ever post a modern.
etvpod.bsky.social
Don’t drop that hard K unless you’re at least a little warp touched or they will throw wings with you.

I very much appreciate the invite on this and took to heart Liam’s writing style of leaning into the narcissism and making myself the monster. Enjoy hating it!

In what might actually be a first for the Sanguinary Utnapishtim, @etvpod.bsky.social has actually used the Guest Post thing to outline his actual philosophical opinions... in more murdery form. He's also done me the ultimate honour of inventing a new slur.

Yeah I can’t speak to why he can’t track those basic facts. 🤷‍♂️

I’m at the point where Buckley is decrying decolonialism and arguing that White South Africans have a right to Apartheid given their justified fear of Black violence. He says the Blacks can self govern when they stop eating each other. Him and Elon would be absolute besties.
etvpod.bsky.social
Somehow this book got even more relevant since I last listened to it. Buckley is so absurdly racist and yet his civility porn approach meant so many people saw him as practicing politics the right way. Truly, every page of this book sounds like it could be describing the current moment.
etvpod.bsky.social
I’m in a funk waiting for my book to get published so I’m going back and listening to books that really did it for me the past few years. First up, The Fire Next Time, about the Buckley vs. Baldwin debate. I continue to be struck by the paradox of progress. Things get better AND they stay the same.
etvpod.bsky.social
This is why calling them weird was such an effective strategy that we should have stuck with.

What he’s railing against is a profound shift in culture, status… He’s obsessed with the idea that America is controlled by a leftist “ruling elite” - but “elite” isn’t defined socio-economically or by political power, it means something like: Getting to define “real America” and who gets to belong.

If you were looking for an authoritarian antichrist, you might think Trump or Miller would be reasonable candidates. Not for Thiel though. He knows Trump only wants to immanentize a peace prize for his ego, and Miller just wants to make America Whiter. Neither of those things concerns Thiel.
etvpod.bsky.social
Yeah, I think in the minds of Thiel et al the utopia they want to bring about is the right kind of individualist utopia. But clearly they’re cool with some authoritarianism along the way.

She's the second prominent social scientist I've seen recently saying, outright, let's just give people what they need because it's the right thing to do.

(The first was Rebekah Levine Coley, her framework for understanding poverty in children's lives is here: psycnet.apa.org/fulltext/202...)

Like, this is super comprehensible if you understand by Antichrist he means someone who’s trying to bring about Heaven on earth or at least end the world on their own globalist terms.
etvpod.bsky.social
This is what fear of immanentizing the eschaton sounds like.

i have joked that neoreactionaries just watched too much anime, but goodness fucking me
Thiel later finds biblical meaning in the
manga One Piece, discussing how he
believes it represents a future where an
antichrist-like one-world government has
repressed science. He believes that the
hero, Monkey D Luffy, represents a
Christlike figure.

"In One Piece, you are set in a fantasy
world, again sort of an alternate earth, but
it’s 800 years into the reign of this one-world
state. Which, as the story unfolds, gradually
gets darker and darker. You sort of realize, in
my interpretation, who runs the world and
it’s something like the antichrist. There’s
Luffy, a pirate who wears a red straw hat,
sort of like Christ’s crown of thorns. And then
towards the end of the story, transforms into
a figure who resembles Christ in Revelation."

Thiel, along with a researcher and writer at
Thiel Capital, explored these ideas at
