Abandoning opposition to pipelines because it polls well with university graduates? How is this not a far grosser, more crash and entirely superficial form of "identitarianism"?
"On the key question of whether to prioritize the economy or the environment, figure 2 shows that 14 percent of Canadians choose the economy, while 46 percent of NDP voters favor the environment — a gap that is even wider when comparing NDP voters to working-class high school graduates. The pattern is sharper still on pipeline development: there is an 84 percent gap between NDP voters and high school graduates on net support for more pipelines. In both instances NDP voters align more closely with university graduates. While pipeline policy rightly involves indigenous consent and environmental safeguards, the underlying question remains whether voters support expanded oil and gas production. On this, the NDP consistently struggles to persuade working-class Canadians of its vision — not because workers reject environmental concerns, but because they experience the economy-environment trade-off as real and immediate. Yet in the face of this dealignment and electoral defeat, the responses from Lewis, McPherson and Ashton have been strikingly limited: the party need not have changed its “values” or policies, they argue, but simply communicate them more effectively. This is rebranding, not renewal. The NDP faces a strategic choice: it can continue to promote the environmental preferences of its professional-class base or it can craft a credible program focused on improving material realities for its working-class base. Worker-driven industrial policy offers such a path — one that takes economic insecurity seriously without surrendering environmental goals."

When I talked to him about the perceived split between class and identitarian politics, he cited an old union organizing mantra: division is a tool of the boss. Many will recall the old line that “they” want you fighting a culture war so you don’t fight a class war. The fact is the Left fights plenty of its own culture wars without prompting from anyone else. And yet, a left movement has to be a unified movement, even as it recognizes that performative politics is a dead end. When McPherson talks about ending “purity tests,” a rather benign statement when read in good faith, she is touching on the same sentiment. And when Lewis emphasizes, say, public ownership of grocery stores to compete with the oligopolists, he, too, is trying to shift the terms and focus of debate. So far, it seems that the candidates aren’t taking the culture war bait, which is a testament to their commitment to doing politics successfully rather than treating the leadership contest like a graduate school seminar."

Want to add to this one of my favourite anecdotes from Paxton where he talks about how Mussolini's attempts to take over social clubs did not exactly work out.
"Italian Fascism’s most successful parallel organization did not chal- lenge the state but invaded the realm of leisure-time recreation, an area heretofore left to individual choice, private clubs, or Catholic parishes. In practice, the Fascist Dopolavoro fell far short of its announced aims of building the nation and creating the Fascist “new man” (and woman). It was substantially appropriated from within by ordinary Italians who just wanted to see movies or play sports" from Robert Paxton's "The Anatomy of Fascism"

Do people really think identifying a reddit account is that difficult? We've been doing it daily since long before these AI tools existed.

Rachel's complaints about Yves? Not even worth mentioning here.... mostly because it would become clear she's upset about his (latest) dalliance with the far right, not outraged by his left-wing views.
In a sign of the depths of status quo ideological rigidity, Paris Marx told Rachel Gilmore “fuck Yves Engler” to which the ‘leftist’ laughed heartily, replying “I feel like he’s not a very serious candidate”. During a segment on the NDP leadership race on Gilmore’s program Thursday, Marx then added “let’s be real, he’s just chasing clout”. Apparently, the others vying to lead the NDP aren’t “chasing clout”. Neither Marx nor Gilmore said a word about my campaign’s comprehensive new policy platform, drawn up by 45 activists and researchers, titled “Capitalism Can’t Be Fixed – Onward to a Socialist Future”. Since I launched my bid to lead the NDP Gilmore, who spent a decade working for Global, IPolitics and CTV in Ottawa, has repeatedly taken shots at me while ignoring the substance of my thirteen books and 1000+ articles.
