We are in the darkest timeline.

And suddenly, all people from Switzerland were shocked to learn they had a prime minister.
Trump: "So I put on a 30% tariff, which is very low. I got an emergency call from I believe the prime minister of Switzerland. She was very aggressive ... I didn't really like the way she talked to us, so instead of giving her a reduction, I raised it to 39%."

And they’ll cancel Bonhomme.
I hear if Canada signs a trade deal with China, China will make them outlaw poutine, toques, and maple syrup.

Elon Musk announcing something feels like one of the best ways to know it will never happen.

Elon Musk's ambition to one day settle Mars appears to have taken a back seat for a rather nearer and more achievable goal – sending humans to live on the moon. https://cnn.it/46sbAMm

i’m taking on a new personal project this month. i’ve just collected a large collection of 35mm film negatives of black american life in the 1970s and 1980s and am going to begin digitizing them into an archive of their own.

i’ll write about my progress here.

a part of the archival acquisition journey is letting go of expectations of what the images will be (!)

last week i decided to buy a set of negatives blind to see what would happen. this set contains images from the immediate aftermath of 9/11, dated 9/16/01. unbelievable!!

This is a really good primer on the limits of infinite growth. People hate the term degrowth, which whatever, but you can't be a rational person and think everyone on earth can consume like your average American and still have a habitable planet.
Economic growth is still heating the planet. Is there any way out?
Rising GDP continues to mean more carbon emissions and wider damage to the planet. Can the two be decoupled?

This is a really big, terrifying deal 🧪
Fearing that educated judges might rule on climate cases, Republican Attorneys General successfully bullied the The Federal Judicial Center (the education & research arm of the federal court system) into removing a chapter summarizing climate science from their scientific judicial reference manual.

They all deserve to feel the joy, recognition and love that was on that boy’s face when Bad Bunny handed him the Grammy.

That, contrasted with the knowledge of the emotions this administration inspires in kids like Liam, says more than any long speech ever could.

When he gave the Grammy to that young boy who made everyone think of Liam…even if that wasn’t actually Liam, it was just the perfect way of cutting through all the bullshit.

Every kid impacted by this administration’s cruelty is another Liam.

When MAGAs say they’re not watching the Super Bowl because of a snowflake petty grievance, it’s an empty threat. The network already paid for the game broadcast rights. The commercials were paid for. There is no audience guarantee so there are no make-goods for lower viewership. No one loses money.

When you see or hear any #SuperBowl economic impact estimates, ignore it. We have nearly 40 years of professional economists that specialize in this stuff proving that the numbers are bullshit. Inflated beyond belief. Reporters that credulously report this stuff drive me nuts.

This was also true of the AI podcast company that threw out a bunch of numbers that I guess sounded impressive to the NYT but if you know anything about the podcasting business it was clear they were making no money at all. It was just a shell game to trick gullible investors
To be very clear, that lady in the NYT article is not making any money with her hundreds of AI slop books.

She makes money by *convincing people* she makes money that way and getting them to pay her to teach them how to do it.

It's an evolved MLM, and the NYT is helping market it.
