Note for people in Quebec who oppose bill S-209 (Canada's very own age verification bill) and want to let your reps know
and if you're in Quebec, the BQ could be swayed if you try a cultural censorship angle (they'll try to limit french content!)

What we are asking if you live in NYC is that you not passively sit back and expect that things will "happen" or "change" but to be actively involved in making things happen and to change them. Do the very small thing of sending a letter to your Council member & CALL THEM. It's really easy to do.

I hope New Yorkers will challenge Mamdani about this. Too often, people feel they need to be absolutely for or against a politician — ignoring their missteps or throwing them out with the bathwater. You can like and/or believe in someone and still challenge them to deliver on their promises.

people turned out in the middle of a pandemic and democratic leadership didnt meet the moment
I know this is a crazy notion, but perhaps we need more people to turn out and vote Democratic so that our 'leaders' can oppose the GOP on all fronts AND ACTUALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

the criticism that voters are the ones failing the democratic coalition acts like dem majorities in 2009 and 2021 simply didnt exist. dems were given power and yes, they improved things somewhat but they didnt do jack to improve their comms apparatus and fundamentally failed at key moments.

"Is there technology the left is excited about?" is the kind of question you only ask if you're wildly naive about technology.

But god forbid we're not fawning over every new implementation of Making Computers Bad At Math.

Well yesterday, the preliminary budget dropped and what does it say about funding our libraries? The Mayor allocated $491 million to libraries. You might be thinking, well that’s more than Adams’s $480 million so what are you pissed about?

Yeah, important to note: LLMs produce the most statistically likely result, so even leaving aside stuff like "The public are wrong about almost everything" which makes the statistically likely result to most questions wrong, even if it got the 'correct' answer it will still never innovate.
You know, AI is kind of the ultimate calcification of tradition. Thinking is too hard, developing your own perspective and consciousness is not something that's really tested for or graded, so aggregate all the existing writing on a topic and tweak it a bit. Regurgitate, recycle, retrench, reify.

Appreciate Chris for pointing out how gross the Supreme Court's action here is, since too many will see it as minor.

They're forcing people seeking justice from the Court to engage in extra (and thus $$$) busywork because two justices will not divest their stocks.
SCOTUS is dealing with problems that arise from justices’ ownership of individual stocks.

What did the court do to address this ethical question? Did the justices agree to divest from individual stock ownership? Of course not.

Parties are directed to include stock ticker symbols in their briefs.
SCOTUS changed the rules for bringing cases to the court because John Roberts won't sell his stocks
Roberts and Alito are the only two justices who own individual stocks. Also: A new lawsuit challenges the Trump admin's removal of the Pride flag at the Stonewall Monument.

If you own every possible channel for information you can do whatever you like in terms of shaping perceptions of Folk Demands.

The shocking thing is despite all this, there's not a hugely unanimous hostility to trans people after years of intensive exposure to hate.
These people never grapple with the reality that the right not only outspends trans people 20:1 but they also control social media algorithms and many legacy media institutions.

They never ask the questions why public opinion changed and why certain issues are so central to the debate.

Trying to fix a broken system by tinkering won't achieve online safety.

The issue? The Internet is centralised in the hands of a few tech behemoths.

Simply adding new rules while harms evolve around them is a losing battle.

We must build something better.
