I wanted to do some free writing. It started as a ghost story but turned into… something else. Enjoy.

Sue sighed as she pulled into the store parking lot. She tried to enjoy her job, but there was something sad about uninstalling pay phones.

The first line of the actual article (cepr.net/publications...) reads "Alright, the Republican Supreme Court has not literally said this".

Don't. Trust. Headlines.

Not even (or maybe especially not) if they say what you want to hear.

found out when I first moved here that Minnesota doesn't require annual inspections for cars, asked an auto shop guy why and he replied that "if your car makes it through the winter? we figure it's probably OK"

The New York Times seems to particularly love doing this.

(The 1 line headline that is an outright lie, according to the article. Not the paywalling, though of course they do that too.)
Sigh. I read an article. Paywalled. Not my fault. As is commonly the case, it's very different than the 1 line headline. Someone proceeds to have an argument with me over the article, not having read the article, but then wondering why I'm arguing some different points.

Apple really as a whole has done a number on people forgetting to use a computer

The most brilliant thing the tech industry did was get people to forget how to use a computer.

Piracy is so easy. It's so simple to not use things like Netflix and set up a Plex server instead.

It's so easy to mod a GameCube or Wii rather than use a Switch 2.

But tech skills have almost died out.

At @inthesetimes.com, we've been following how tenant unions are adapting strategies from organized labor.

Here's a fascinating story about the flipside: a corporate landlord taking a page from anti-union employers, even hiring a "union avoidance" firm. (1/8)

As Tenants Organize, Landlords Embrace Old-School Union-Busting
Tenant union members say they’ve faced threats, surveillance and retaliation from their private equity landlord, which has retained a notorious “union avoidance” firm.

"Oh, if I record state changes in my app as entries in a ledger, then I can process entries for the same entity sequentially and materialise current entity state without deadlocks".

Lots of developers invent event sourcing sooner or later 😀

Don't stop there! Now think through the implications.

Someone else said it but it bears repeating:

"The Muppet Christmas Carol" is the best movie ever because Michael Caine treats the Muppets as fellow, human actors.

"Muppet Treasure Island" is the best movie ever because Tim Curry treats himself as a Muppet.

Of course it does (to him).

"Structural" is a hard word at his reading level. Better to stick with more monosyllabic words.

OK, my basic sense of honor compels me to say this. I have heard a good use case for LLMs.

In a meeting today, it was announced we had authorized access to an LLM for work purposes. I said "If it isn't mandated we use it, I don't plan to. I've never seen a good use for it."

There are very few immutable rules of politics anymore.

But politicians being punished for telling voters they aren’t hurting financially when they’re hurting financially— that rule has never gone away.
