Please do not let anyone ever tell you that there were not movements of people opposed to slavery, pretty much wherever it existed.
Prince Hall & his collaborators twice endeavored to pass legislation in the Massachusetts state senate to end slavery. In a 1777 petition they argued for “the Natural Right of all Men” & against “the inconsistency of [people] acting themselves the part which they condemn and oppose in others . . .”

Our legal victory in AAUP v. Trump ensures that the Trump administration cannot use civil rights laws to pull federal research funds from universities, which undermines our 1st and 10th amendment rights.

AAUP General Counsel Veena Dubal explains why this is a major victory for higher ed workers.

WHOA. The FBI was/is spying on a Signal chat for a New York immigration court watch group, claiming they were “anarchist violent extremist actors.”

Your reminder that the government is watching and don’t say anything in a big group chat you wouldn’t say on TV.

So just so everyone is clear about what this is : Mike Johnson and the executive branch are normalizing the claim that any kind of dissent that is fact based is treason and an executable offense to the fascist regime.

This is the intellectual framework for the mass murder of your opposition.

NEW: I spent a week in Connecticut’s only immigration court, where thousands of people each year learn if they can stay in the United States.

The court doesn’t allow photography, so I took an illustrator.

In 2024, Tierra Walker was sick and getting sicker. She was also pregnant.

She knew abortion was illegal in Texas, but thought there was an exception for women like her, whose health was at risk. Doctors told her there was no emergency.

Then she died.

They were, with one exception, not high-level criminals. One was a fisherman. One was a bus driver; another a taxi driver.
