Hello world! I’m a huge Mayor Wu stan who thinks she’s one of the great progressive leaders in America right now.
Is there a coherent America first defense to the Argentina bailout or is it just Rubio and the other hawks wanting more right wing governments in South and Central America?
Trump repeatedly saying they’re going to shut down “Democrat programs” and killing SNAP first should end this. I just don’t know if there are enough vulnerable GOPers who are willing to break, though.
This is genuinely insane. Every Dem needs to be talking about this.
If the voters of Maine elect him he will be part of the coalition. What should they do, reject his votes on legislation? With that being said I absolutely hope Maine doesn’t elect him. Having a tattoo like that should be disqualifying.
Everything else aside it’s pretty funny that this article seems to be Platner related when Platner’s advocacy is decidedly pro-trans rights.
Yglesias wants primary voters to not choose the candidate who represents their views, but the one who represents the most popular views. He doesn’t actually care about principles and wishes Democratic voters felt the same.
MattY will never miss a chance to make a point about how Dems should be trying harder to earn the support of transphobes.
this feels completely banal? yes, a big tent political party is going to include voters who have bigoted views. i don’t think anyone has argued otherwise? the actual question at hand is “to what extent should a political party ostensibly committed to equality appeal to popular prejudices?”
Bigots in the tent
What did you think winning meant? vibes? papers? essays? losers.

Oh, you want to make a political party that only takes positions on issues that enjoy majority support in polling? Should we throw a celebration? Should we call Andrew Yang?
I mean, if he happens to become a Senator, Dems should work with him to the extent he supports progressive/liberal policies. That doesn’t mean endorsing his tattoo or any bigoted policy suggestions he makes, which Yglesias seems to want us to do.
If someone is so bigoted that the Democrats need to become bigoted to earn their votes, then that’s not a voter we should try to earn. This should be noncontroversial.
God he just completely twists the position most progressives have on this, doesn’t he? Obviously not all homophobes and transphobes are RWers. A big tent will include bigots, but the big tent shouldn’t become bigoted to include them.
Another day of Graham Platner discourse? No thanks, I live in Massachusetts, we gave Maine away hundreds of years ago.
I hope you realize that if you don’t care what policies politicians advocate for and you distrust them out of hand because they remind you of other bad politicians, you are the one voting off vibes, not me. I’m tired of you implying that I’m gullible or sexist because I care about policy. Goodnight.
Deleting this comment because it’s uselessly pedantic. His tattoo and many of his Reddit posts are disqualifying and I don’t want that to get muddled. At best he has horrible judgment and clearly doesn’t care what minority voters think of him.
Life must be so awesome in your world where you never get excited about politicians proposing policies you think would improve your life. You’re so much smarter and better than the rest of us, who stupidly cling to hope that politicians will improve our lives.
But yeah, prior to the tattoo I thought Platner would’ve been way better than Mills. He has better policy proposals, such as abolishing filibuster, which is critical to enacting a Dem agenda. I don’t think I ever said she “sucks.” I actually like her but I’m disappointed there’s not a better option
Should’ve said it in the past tense.

I think the tattoo is disqualifying but I don’t question Platner’s progressive bonafides. They seem legit. I think he just has really poor judgment and doesn’t seem to value minority support, both of which are disqualifying.
If you think being disappointed by a politician is unique to people who support bearded white male populists, you were born yesterday.
I think she would be a markedly worse senator but I provided substantive reasons for why, which you’re ignoring because you’ve already decided it’s actually because I like Platner’s beard.
You keep ignoring the substance to accuse me (a Michelle Wu fan account) of not preferring Mills because she’s a woman. Tell me, does she support M4A? Abolishing the filibuster? Ending unconditional money to Israel? Those are policies I care about.
I’m sorry, I support candidates based on policy. I’m not going to get excited about a candidate with weaker policy proposals because the other one is a masculine populist. Maybe it means I get lied to by a politician, wouldn’t be the first time.
And I applaud her for that! She deserves a lot of credit for it! Where did you get the idea that I don’t give her credit, or that I think she’s some awful, terrible politician?

(And for the record, Platner has also stood up for trans people against Trump’s attacks)
Lmao I run a fan account for a progressive female mayor who isn’t even really populist but sure, I’m just a sexist who liked Platner because he was a bro and Mills is “cringe.”
His record includes a previously anonymous Reddit account where he posted a lot about being a leftist and a communist. His policy platform was left wing. It’s not just vibez. Appreciate you calling me sexist, but it’s actually because his policy platform was better than hers. Novel concept I know.
