I've got a writing book problem: When I have a book writing problem, I pick up a writing book, and since writing is hard I've read dozens of writing books in the last decade. This is my attempt to make sense of them.

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

I love these videos by Struthless on YouTube for keeping myself creative and away from the doom spirals. If you're not feeling it today, worth a watch?

*sigh* how did you know about my cable box of shame? I'd clean it out, but I might *need* a four-foot coax cable or a type B cable in the future?
Twitter accounts are based in Russia. BlueSky accounts are based in homes with, frankly, too many books, plants, obsolete cables, and pieces of rustic pottery, that could do with a bit of a tidying up, to be honest.

When Dwight Swain was teaching workshops my granddad was still in college. Yet much of his advice rings true today. If I was teaching a class, this is the book we'd use.

Read this #writingabtwriting to see if 'Techniques of the Selling Writer' is right for you.

A 50’s era pulp writer speed runs your writing knowledge. If I was teaching a college course today on writing fiction, this is the book we’d use as a textbook.

Fuck AI. Copy like an artist instead.

When you know your work isn't measuring up, but you're not sure why or how to get to the next level, use a trick from the artists and do a master study to figure out how the fuck they did that instead of stealing their work.

On August 12, 1971, 16-year-old me mailed the first story I ever wrote off on its first submission to my dream market, F&SF. My tale was quickly rejected. On July 17th, 2025, I finally sold a story to that magazine. Here's why I felt I had to withdraw that story. www.scottedelman.com/wordpress/20...
