All of the companies that make the software I use are increasing their prices, to account for an "investment" in AI.

I'm sat here imagining how my clients would feel if I added 30% to each invoice, because I "really got into gambling".

Went to a prayer service tonight at St. Mary of the Lake, where they have cardboard cutouts throughout the church representing parishioners afraid to come to Mass because of ICE.

I’ve seen the post about how everybody is twelve years old now and I’d like to amend the theory to nine. Nine years old.

One of my deeply held beliefs is that if we could condition people to accept how chance affects their lives, they’d be much better equipped to recognize how systemic things impact them.
We are suckers for agency when we think we can game a system, even where we can't. "I have a system to always win auctions/gambling/stock market..." No you don't, you get lucky sometimes and notice, and then keep chasing that.

make art! if it's the end of the world, you might as well make art! if it's not the end of the world, then the future will be better because people made art right now!

My long game
The word around town is that the next big thing is Artisanal Imagery, hand-made visuals that you simply have to own if you don't want to be left behind

GO AROUND
I cannot open the wall
I dunno if you have a doorknob on the other side
But over here there’s nothing
It’s just flat
Everyone has one Mitch Hedberg joke stashed in their brain like a squirrel to sustain them whenever they need to feel joy for 30 seconds and mine is “they say the recipe for Sprite is Lemon and Lime but I tried to make it at home, there’s more to it than that”

By nature and nurture this is my work in the world, thank you for the recognition.
The people who actually raise their hands to say “I don’t understand” are holding up half the sky, thank you

This is, in large part, pandemic revenge.

As far as these oligarchs are concerned, all science does is tell them stuff they cannot do.

They can't keep spewing carbon.

They can't keep businesses open as usual when millions are dying.

They have concluded that research is the enemy of profit.
Absolute BLOODBATH at HHS/NIH/CDC this morning. Generation of scientists, health care officials being wiped out

What if we circulated a monthly booklet with interesting things to read and look at? Printed on paper? With art? No uploading. Folks could submit writing and images for inclusion. It could (theoretically) be delivered to your address for a small fee

Tech companies ran into the weekend community swap market, stole everything, and are now selling pale imitations of the goods. They're killing sharing....

We’re not free until we’re all free.

And the corollary of that—and I need some people to REALLY fucking internalize this—is that if you gamble with someone else’s freedom, you’re risking your own.

He keeps calling Justin Trudeau “Governor”! The man is the Prime Minister of a sovereign nation! All of this is ridiculous and nobody should be afraid to say that.
my take is that your willingness to accept this gulf of america nonsense is an indicator of your willingness to accept much worse things coming from this administrator
Trump’s decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico may be upsetting to some, writes @giladedelman.bsky.social, but “in a democracy, values are determined by majority rule, and they don’t shift in only one direction. They can shift back”:

Help me identify this WWII soldier for a story I'm writing. My deadline is Feb. 14. The portrait was made between 1943 & 1945 in Pittsburgh's Hill District. He has a rifle medal on his chest, Service Forces patch & a Corps of Engineers insignia on his hat. Please repost & help me ID him. 🗃️

And again
I'm so worried for all of us. Some more urgently, some so much it hurts. But all of us nonetheless.

I keep needing to touch reality — as in, go outside and hold rocks in my hands.
Just remember, while top generals are outright calling Trump a fascist and talking about his admiration for Hitler, his Christian nationalist acolytes are comparing themselves to Bonhoeffer and claiming Dems are the real Nazis.

Stop taking Bonhoeffer’s name in vain, his relatives and scholars warn Eric Metaxas, Project 2025
(RNS) — Scholars and family members of the famed theologian worry conservatives will use a new Bonhoeffer movie to promote Christian nationalism and political violence.

a kind of prayer woven by doing, by making

not necessarily in any religious sense but not less holy for that
Just a reminder that if you make things, narrative things, art things, human things... they might save someone's soul someday. You won't know about it, but that's part of the magic. As long as you're honest and human in your making of things, you're doing it right.
