They will try to explain how this isn't who they are and how they just got caught up in the moment and a little authoritarianist groupthink happens to the best of us, but we must not let them. A lack of accountability for "conservatives" over generations exactly why this country is where we are.
This was the inevitable direction of the Republican Party after the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts, when it got the bright idea of buying white votes with racism.
