“Sin, young man, is when you treat people like things. Including yourself. That’s what sin is.”
― Terry Pratchett, Carpe Jugulum

No religion ever made it this clear. Families could stay together, and wars might even be averted if they did. But religions would go out of business. #Discworld

I don't know about that, but I will say that great wealth is like the One Ring: Often the person with it thinks they are wielding it, but ultimately it wields them, and for its own ends, not theirs. It takes a strong person to resist its temptations, and that sort of person is not likely to seek it.
wealth is a mental illness
There's a point, well below a billion dollars, where the amount of money you have lets you rid yourself of anyone who can be a check on your worst impulses, and replace them with people who tell you those worst impulses are somehow valorous. Rare is the billionaire with someone to tell them "no."

Discworld QOTD, from Thud!

“Beating people up in little rooms…he knew where that led. And if you did it for a good reason, you’d do it for a bad one. You couldn’t say ‘We’re the good guys’ and do bad-guy things.”
Discworld QOTD, from Making Money

"‘Even tyrants have to obey the law.’ He paused, looking thoughtful, and continued: ‘No, I tell a lie, tyrants do not have to obey the law, obviously, but they do have to observe the niceties.’"

The people who drive us to seek solace in fiction are horribly real, while the characters who soothe our souls are sadly not.

J K Rowling made patriarchy more palatable in the Harry Potter books by giving her female characters magic as another way to carry water for it.

as someone from the US who now lives in a country with exclusively privatized delivery services, the USPS is one of the greatest institutions of all time and I agree with Terry Pratchett and the US constitution about the necessity of delivering the mail

Terry Pratchett said is best and most succinctly: Evil begins when people are treated as things.

In the US, 'ownership' of children is practically baked into the culture, which is also why women are routinely infantilized as if we don't know how to live autonomously.

Indeed. Everyone wants to be the *second* person to oppose the administration and not the *first*.
I always wondered, when I read Suetonius, how everyone could put up with Caligula for so long.

I think I understand better now. The institutional and social inertia is so strong, especially among elites with “something to lose”. No one wants to stick their heads up first, so they go into denial.

In "The Time Monster" on Doctor Who, he makes a Time-flow Analogue. It measures the flow of time and can jam it. He makes it out of kitchen junk and tea leaves.

On #Discworld, witches make Shambles to measure and amplify magic, using stuff in their pockets and a living thing.

They're the same.

Federal tax prosecutions have fallen to their lowest level in decades — dropping 27% the past year.

This comes after Trump made deep cuts to the IRS.

DOJ agents were reportedly also told not to prioritize tax prosecutions.

Tax cheats must be thrilled.

AI is being used by corporations to shaft consumers and is threatening young workers’ job prospects.

So Trump wants to ram through a ban on state AI regulation — all to help out his Big Tech billionaire friends.
