railroad worms on a date
male and female railroad worm, a bioluminescent beetle with a larviform female. The female is long and wormlike, dark brown in color with red orange spots, the male is small and orange with very complex branched antennae. the male is saying "she would like extra pickles" and the female has pink cartoon blush marks

The bulky Brontostoma basalis from Ecuador - incredibly strong and its venom packs a punch! When I took it out of the vial it immediately grabbed my finger and bit it. Was it painful? Yes, for a hot minute. But as always with assassin bugs it is more the speed of action that surprises me the most.

Munchipede update: she's getting big, one oak leaf at a time 💚

I spend so much time at my home away from home that I get to watch my children grow. She's just munching her way through the leaf in a neater fashion than I can do cutting a pizza

What about this bling covering - The genus Formosia (Tachinidae) have some of the most striking bodies. Its not for showing off but to hide in the mottled forest light (hiding as we do under a tree) their 'presence'

1/2 #speciesaday no. 679 is Euophrys frontalis. A very common jumper in open habitats. Identifiable throughout much of the year. Adult males have magic wands for front legs and red-ringed eyes (think Paul Daniels with hay fever). Striking white on the top of the palps too! I just love salticids!

"This cladoceran can’t swim, but it can climb trees! It never leaves contact with the substrate, even when sufficient water is present, as in the culture vessels. Here it crawls over the bottom and assiduously crawls over or through the detritus, chiefly by the action of the trunk limbs with occasional assistance from the postabdomen. The antennae seem to function more as balancing structures, like halteres, in that when the animal is erect on a horizontal surface, such as the bottom of a petri dish, the antennae vibrate rapidly without seeming to contribute in any way to the forward movement. The animal moves slowly and deliberately. Even when undisturbed it undergoes long quiescent periods, sometimes with no movement of any of the trunk limbs. Disturbance, such as from touching with a needle, results in cessation of all activity. there's an entire superorder (very big category) of crustaceans called Syncarids, and like 99% of them are tiny white eyeless sub-millimeter things living in cavewater, except in Tasmania, where they just casually live on the surface world like regular shrimp. infuriating

Here's the lad at the end of a 9-inch journey to a female. He's got wings but he just derpily ambles along the tree bark with the singular mission of finding the Source of those pheromones and then get scraped off as the lass crawls into a crevice for the winter
