If we're making introductions: I'm one-half of novelist Renee Patrick @rpatrickbooks.bsky.social, the other half being my wife Rosemarie Keenan. In our books, Edith Head solves mysteries in Golden Age Hollywood. And I have a newsletter, Cocktails and Crime. vincekeenan.substack.com
I was investigating Tom Stoppard's contributions to SLEEPY HOLLOW the other day, because there will be a SLEEPY HOLLOW cocktail in A HELL OF A DRINK. This is a solid overview of his doctoring work (BEETHOVEN?!?). www.nytimes.com/2025/11/30/t...

The death of browsing is part of the reason art is the way it is now. Our opinions are largely fed to us by algorithms. Spending a spare 15 minutes wandering around a bookstore or comic shop or video rental place was how you found stuff you wouldn't ordinarily pick up and thereby expanded your taste
Bookselling is like the most "people go to the store and buy what looks cool to them without a particular agenda" type business left, and your purchases have a huge influence on what is ordered, what is displayed, and what is recommended.

RIP Tom Stoppard, among many other things the writer on BRAZIL who came up with the Tuttle/Buttle angle, which gave the film its spine. Plus if he wrote every line in LAST CRUSADE he's the one to thank for "I should have mailed it to the Marx Brothers." www.hollywoodreporter.com/lifestyle/ar...

It's only a matter of time before humanities departments will be forced to accept AI-authored assignments, as part of revised university policy to cooperate with these billionaires. It's already happening, and our response needs to be decisive. Because our students' ability to *think* is at stake.

All this talk about Thanksgiving movies and not one mention of SCENT OF A WOMAN (1992), which should be playing on a 24-hour loop today like GROUNDHOG DAY or A CHRISTMAS STORY.

Just a friendly reminder as we go into the holidays:

Folks don't have to explain to you why they don't drink.

If you offer them a drink and they decline, don't ask them why. It's not your business.

Just offer them something without alcohol to drink instead. And move on.
