I asked the the lady at the cafe counter how spicy today's stew was, and she gave me a rating based on white people, from vanilla to Hot Ones, lol.

Tfw you get out of your car in your apartment parking lot and immediately drop your half-full box of sweet potato fries, so close, bare YARDS away from your home

Reminder: you don't have to engage with AI as an instructor. You can talk about AI--even build AI literacy, if you want to call it that--and still not engage directly with a brutal, unethical, ecologically disastrous bundle of technologies. Regardless of institutional pressure, you can refuse.

Today in I’m Very Bad at Self-Promotion, this article that I wrote about the rise of contemplative practices in contemporary Christian contemplative practices just came out. This was really fun to research and write! I could write a whole giant essay about my dude St. Benedict and his Rule.

This is absolutely true. I worked at a small indie store and if a book that wasn't from a major author sold within a month of being brought in, we would reorder. The margin for success is tiny in small bookstores.
I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

I'm facetiming with my family Thanksgiving party, and one of my aunties just picked up a pair of sunglasses next to her and ask if they were mine, lol.

Maybe we can have just one more James Bond film with Pierce Brosnan. Playing Bond at Pierce Brosnan's real-life age. He has to AVOID action, though sometimes he has no choice. Relies mainly on brains, not brawn.

Hilariously, one of my Pop Culture students put in their notes on #PrideAndPrejudice, "Wait, what happened to Mary? Do we ever find out?"

Do I...reply with an AO3 link?

I used to handle interlibrary loans for a public library. ILL is a magnificent expression of the idea that readers deserve books, and books deserve readers. It’s libraries everywhere pooling their resources for the benefit of everyone.

Killing IMLS could have killed ILL.

This is great news. 📚

If you use GMail, AI (Gemini) was turned on yesterday by default and now scans all of your content for machine learning. To turn off, go to Settings>General and scroll down. Uncheck the box for "Smart features."

There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.

i'm so sorry but i don't think it's a moral failing, or indicative of some character deficit to be taken in by ai. it's very pervasive, and despite wishing otherwise, a lot of it is near indistinguishable from the stolen work it's based in. we can admit that and still hate ai.

I really can't stress how important it is for progressive and leftists to contend for school, library, water, etc etc boards. Hyper local involvement in our communities where we can actually influence lives.

There’s a very surreal conversation I keep having on here where people seem unable to hold two ideas at the same time, and I’m not sure why. It’s simply true that the Big AI platforms like ChatGPT are:
1. Extremely bad for society, in many ways.
2. Very genuinely popular with lots of people.

I find academics particularly awkward about telling audiences something some people might already know, even though I've found that when someone repeats some things I already know as background it enhances my perception of their credibility

Don't fear the repetition, embrace it!

Just read a talk announcement about "AI" and K-12 education that looked like it maybe, maybe embedded a critical perspective but was still dressed up in the language of AI hype, presupposing both job market & education "reshaped by AI".

Quite a few people seem to imagine that political parties are collections of discrete individuals rather than groups with organizational dynamics, including the dynamic of "collectively caving to fascism".
I really don't understand why progressives are all amplifying that "the Democrats" caved. It was 8 Senators, it was not "the Democrats". You are all just hurting our chances in '26 blaming Democrats as some monolith. Trump would not be blaming "Republicans". He'd be calling for the heads of those 8.

I think that many do not realize that when people say they will die without the ACA, they are not exaggerating or being dramatic. I take medication daily because without it my body does not recognize when to stop bleeding. So I take medication to "trick" my uterus into thinking I am pregnant.

I know I don't have the traditional version of a full life, as I have no partner, no offspring, no pets, and no mortgage, but every once in a while I can randomly fuck off to Portland and spend half my paycheck on books and hipster food, and that ain't exactly nothing.
