I just don’t see how the federal funding system for academia isn’t well and truly cooked now. If the NIH etc meaningfully survive to 2029 the next MAGA president will just kill them again. Maybe a future generation will decide to stop committing national suicide

I suspect some combo of Republican Senators and European leaders could convince Trump to disown this if they emphasize that it makes him look weak and incompetent; he could easily shiv Witkoff.

This is just as true as before the “official release.” Ukraine won’t accept this. The European powers are already a big nope. The amount of coercion that the Trump admin would need to get this through? Even trying for a prolonged period would do real damage to U.S. national interests.
More on my #hottake on the “Ukraine plan” — it rests on a paradox: to make it happen, the U.S. needs to further sabotage its credibility, but it needs that credibility to make the plan viable!
