Montreal is only two hours from Ottawa but to our civic (mis)leaders it might as well be on the moon.

Montreal has incredible cycling infrastructure. Way more bike lanes than Vancouver, Bixi is everywhere, and you notice more bikes locked up on the sidewalk.

By me this week - the happiest thing I've got to report of late, with a glorious trip over the summer to Montreal

"Forget EVs. Cycling is revolutionising transport."

And because of this, it will never not be utterly maddening to hear xenophobes argue that Canada has no space for more people.

A country this size should be at least 100 million people. Anything less is pathetic.

Fun fact: despite the enormous land mass, the population-weighted density of Canada — basically the density experienced by the average person — is the same as Denmark and close to the Netherlands.

Canada and Denmark are 3,000 people per km², while the Netherlands is 3,400/km².

Tom Friedman: If Yahya Sinwar was still alive, I'd ask him 'besides provoking a genocidal response from Israel thereby turning that country into a global pariah that no one will ever trust again, what have you even accomplished?
Yahya Sinwar, dead: That would be enough.

Mamdani inspires joy and hope. Trump foments rage and contempt. They are not the same and their supporters are not the same either.

Has anyone seen anyone advocating for Spanish Civil War style international brigades to assist in fighting fascism in the USA? Not interested in hearing arguments here about whether or not this is a good idea. I want to read what people are saying about the possibility, if anything.

Trump, a vocal war crimes enthusiast for more than a decade, is mad he didn’t get the nobel so his aides are gonna spend all day humiliating themselves in competition over who can kiss his ass better

Israelis should be less quick to praise the fascist deploying troops in American cities. Like, *that's* your saviour? Really?

I’ve known Em since she was a powerhouse student organizer. Then and now she’s been on the front lines for Palestinian freedom and I hope she’s safe. Please join me in calling Em’s senators & reps & demanding her immediate release

The flotilla carrying Jewish Currents reporter Emily Wilder has been captured by the Israeli military. Please contact Emily's senators and representatives—Adam Schiff, Alex Padilla, and Jimmy Gomez—and urge them to advocate for her safe release from Israeli detention

This is disgusting behaviour from Carney towards Karina Gould.

And frankly, coupled with the “boys club” stuff sources have previously told me and the way he tended to lose patience more quickly with female journalists during the campaign…he may need to “look inside himself.”
MACLEAN'S excerpt:

The attacks were genteel compared to most political mud-slinging, and Liberals warmed to her during the campaign. They embraced her as both a cherished member of the
Liberal family and, increasingly, the standard bearer for its left flank. But her needling got under Carney's skin, even though he was the front-runner (she ultimately received only three per cent of the vote). He and his staff made their irritation plain; one member of Gould's team told me that many of them were aggressive in their vitriol toward her. MACLEAN'S excerpt continued:

“When someone from Gould's team texted to ask if she could stop by and congratulate the winner, Carney said no. In fact, according to one source I spoke with, he said he didn't ever want to see her again. Carney's staff sent Gould a non-committal answer, trying not to offend her, but she showed up anyway. That led to a brief, awkward meeting with Carney.
The incident rattled some of the people around the newly elected leader. Many had worked under Justin Trudeau, who, after a lifetime in politics, had skin like a crocodile.
Carney, after years of being celebrated, venerated and treated with the deference accorded to a titan of the financial world, seems to have a skin like a peach.”

I don't know who needs to hear this but might does not in fact make right and so, no, you do not in fact have to hand it to him.

They were right not to vote for Harris. But this doesn't mean Trump is in any way good or even that this current situation is a positive development. Might does not make right. What Trump has done here is *not peace*.

i feel no pleasure in expressing this but the sections of the pro palestinian left which refused to vote for harris may have been right in this very limited context

Another never-before-seem package delivery company just dropped. What a stupid economy they have built for us.
typzk.bsky.social
I hate that there are so many different package delivery companies. I wish there was only one so I wouldn't have to set up accounts with seven different companies, some I've never even heard of, to track the packages I am expecting.
***Canada Post should be the one company for this.***

Dear Nobel Peace Prize Committee,

Can you please clarify your position on "might makes right"?

Thank you.

Police in Airdrie, Alberta (just north of Calgary) say this driver hit a 17-year-old girl in a marked crosswalk, got out of the vehicle, and appeared to get upset at the teenager before driving away.

They released this video and are now trying to identify the driver.
