Every couple of years the media rediscovers gay Republicans (as if Andrew Sullivan hasn't been writing this same grievance slop for 30 years) but in case you're confused I don't recommend getting the pulse of the queer community from a straight woman in The Wall Street Journal

It must be noted that WelcomePAC is closely affiliated with the blue dog coalition, a small group consisting of only 10 of the most conservative Democrats in Congress like Henry Cuellar and Vicente Gonzalez. All of their members have voted or spoken out against trans rights before. 1/2

The elimination of the filibuster at the start of the Trump administration would be the most disastrous thing to happen for trans people federally.

The policies it would usher in would make what we've seen the first 11 months feel like a cakewalk.

If they eliminate the filibuster, it means national bans on gender affirming care, bathroom bans, a sports ban, gender marker bans, elimination of legal recognition etc. It will make life unlivable for trans people in the US, even in blue states. It's a worst case scenario.

Democrats need to realize that, at this point, they’re in a lose-lose situation. They either vote for Republican’s CR or the filibuster is ended and the CR passes anyway. But the latter is much worse since it would also make it easy for republicans to pass their most extreme far right policies.

Under normal circumstances, yes. But I’m extremely worried that we’re getting to the point where they might be willing to do anything to end the shutdown.

Ending the filibuster would be disastrous! Republican’s worst policies like a national abortion ban and national GAC ban would be able to pass.

If this does take effect, I recommend reaching out to the Trans Youth Emergency Project. They are already preparing to help trans youth find private and community based providers who won’t be impacted by the rules.

There’s not much they can do other than sue, which they definitely will once the rule is officially announced
