They said "existential threat".
I believed those words - but they're acting like they didn't.

I'm Alex Rikleen, and I am running for US Senate in Massachusetts.

For anyone who likes the idea of generational change, but wants a candidate who won't throw trans kids under the bus:

Markey already has a challenger!

- positions himself as an outsider, but he's been in DC for over a decade!
- simultaneously downplays his anti-trans comments, while also acting like he was doing something important by confronting a key issue.

Markey is very clear that he's running.

But he has another younger opponent already, one who won't throw trans kids under the bus:

Actively anti-American governance.

He doesn't see us as a single country guided by laws.
He sees only people who help him, and people he can take from.

Trump admin has frozen or cancelled $28 b for projects, almost all in Dem districts. Small amount of frozen funds in GOP districts are in predominately Dem states (CA, OR, WA, CO, MN, IL, NY, MD), or in predominately Dem cities (St Louis, Atlanta, Greenville) www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

These attacks are illegal. We need an investigation, and the people ordering them must be held accountable.

They are also profoundly un-American.

Capital punishment without a trial is the antithesis of what this country is supposed to stand for.

*Technically Hegseth's tattoo is not one associated with 1930s &40s Nazi Germany.

However, it *is* a tattoo that modern far-right extremists and people who self-identify as pro-Nazi have adopted.

It is not his only tattoo that is associated with the modern far-right.

The SecDef has a Nazi tattoo*.
The President's biggest donor did a Nazi salute twice after referencing a famous Nazi slogan.
The VP intervened to make sure the admin rehired someone fired for pro-Nazi statements.

These kids are following the examples set by their leadership.

For those who didn't follow it closely, this is *exactly* the kind of thing the TwitterFiles & all that forced outrage was allegedly upset about.

Except, this may actually be worse. If this request was coming from DOJ, it may have come with a threat (we don't know yet) - an escalation from the TF.

I'm sorry, is the Trump Administration talking to a tech platform?

Is it...requesting content moderation?
Today following outreach from @thejusticedept, Facebook removed a large group page that was being used to dox and target @ICEgov agents in Chicago.
The wave of violence against ICE has been driven by online apps and social media campaigns designed to put ICE officers at risk just for doing their jobs. The Department of Justice will continue engaging tech companies to eliminate platforms where radicals can incite imminent violence against federal law enforcement.

"Fall; or Dodge in Hell" isn't Neal Stephenson's best work, but I wish more people were familiar with it's prediction/criticism of [all ⬇️ of this]

Eric Trump: "We're saving Christianity. We've saving God. We've saving the family unit. We're saving this nation. I mean, DEI is out of the window, Benny. You no longer have Colin Kaepernick kneeling for the national anthem. You no longer have Budweiser going woke as hell. All of this is dead."
rikleen.bsky.social
That is (unfortunately) most likely correct, but I do think we can also celebrate the partial wins when we get them
rikleen.bsky.social
They know we have numbers and power.
They know our protests are one of the most truly American things a person can do.

Come out Saturday.

Emmer: "We call it the 'Hate America' rally because you'll see the hate for America all over this thing when they show up. The rumor is that they can't end this shutdown because this small but very violent and vocal group is the only one that's happy about this."

I am excited & honored to have my op-ed in today's @bostonglobe.com

Voters across the country & across the Commonwealth are showing that they are unsatisfied with the status quo.

The Democratic party should welcome that energy, not protect the status quo.

[Big text] Boston Globe!

[screenshot] OPINION Mass. Democratic establishment should welcome newcomers, not protect the status quo

A robust antiestablishment energy is visible in Massachusetts.

[still within screenshot, start of italicized byline] Alex Rikleen, a former teacher, is running for US Senate in Massachusetts, challenging Senator Ed Markey in the Democratic primary.

[Alex Rikleen Democrat for Senate logo in the bottom right corner] [first screenshot] For many, Mamdani's win is an example of the shifting political landscape in America - the best example yet of antiestablishment enthusiasm winning against what the old rules of politics might predict. Many postelection conversations focused on what Democrats could learn from Mamdani's success to strengthen the party.

But in Massachusetts, where the Democratic primary was still more than 14 months away, one Democratic official moved quickly to prevent a primary challenge from getting off the ground.

[second screenshot]  Voter frustration can be felt throughout the country and the Commonwealth. And history shows that in midterm elections, incumbents can be ousted in primary campaigns. We saw that happen last time Trump was president, with the congressional election victory of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York. In Massachusetts in 2018, then-Boston city councilor Ayanna Pressley led an outsider campaign over then-representative Mike Capuano. Massachusetts also saw it in the 2014 midterms, when Seth Moulton, a first-time candidate, ousted then-representative John F. Tierney.

Massachusetts Democratic leaders aren't serving the state when they circle the wagons and protect the status quo. They should welcome newcomers and give them a chance to connect with voters.

The peak of Vietnam protests was estimated at about 2 million attendees.

As a percentage of total population, that beats Hands Off but is behind No Kings 1.
rikleen.bsky.social
Not "some of" - get rid of that qualifier!

In terms of total attendance, this *is* the largest protest movement in American history.

# of rallies is harder to get good evidence for (now and historically), but, as far as I have been able to find, this era leads there, too.

It's a complete failure of 2025 media that the following sentence is not common knowledge:

We are in the midst of the largest sustained protest movement in American history.

After Saturday, there will have been 3 events larger than anything during the Vietnam War.
rikleen.bsky.social
While I'm talking about 10/18, I should mention - I will be speaking at one/some of these!

I'll announce more details once everything is finalized and we are closer.

But if you are or might be in the vague area of Northwest of Boston, keep an eye out for more info!

The "largest protest in American history" sounds like tooting their own horn, but it's likely to be accurate.

No Kings June was the #1 largest protest in US history by almost any metric.
Hands Off in April was in the 3rd-5th range.
And there are already more events planned on 10/18 than 6/14.

There were more people in Boston - just Boston - on 6/14 than the nation-wide peak of the Tea Party movement (4/15/09).

This protest movement is unlike anything the country has ever seen.
