if you’re baffled by how trump plans to lower overdose deaths, you’re not alone. it’s pretty clear he doesn’t know what he’s fighting against. as usual, it’s not about the drugs at all. my latest for @salon.com

The president's war on fentanyl is just another way to expand state power and inflame fear

Agents in Key Largo, Florida ripped this woman wearing medical scrubs out of her car as she screamed she is a US citizen. Agents cuffed her and put her in one of their cars.

She was eventually let go, per David Goodhue of the Miami Herald, who also took this footage:

everyday i learn about a new empty headed idiot who happily gobbles up the administration's slop in defense of the utterly indefensible
Batya might be just fine with a dudetrustme basis for a terrorist designation, but Americans with a functioning moral compass actually expect a plausible public rationale for who is to be treated as a terrorist in our name.

Goodbye to my lovely Grandma Barbara. She was a great writer, who had a strong influence on my father's creativity and thus mine. She sent me the weirdest xmas gifts, usually stuff related to science. She drove me to my first job at a newspaper in Laconia, NH. I'm so grateful she was in my life.

One thing I always want to ask these masculinity entrepreneurs is why men can’t look to women as role models, and can’t see in women models of human virtue and thriving that are worth emulating. After all, women look to men for these all the time.

Three out of five men in this shot have been accused of sexual misconduct, harassment or abusive behaviour towards women. A fourth signed into law a near-total abortion ban in his state as governor.

What's happening with the Chicago Public Libraries right now is terrible. The proposed budget of the city would CUT 89 CPL positions. Importantly, 78 positions were lost LAST year. That would be 167 positions in 2 YEARS while COPS KEEP GETTING MORE MONEY. ENOUGH. SAY NO.

beneath RFK's attacks on science and vaccines is something more sinister: the erosion of the idea that public health should be about the public at all. my latest for @salon.com

www.salon.com/2025/11/29/r...
RFK’s individualism rhetoric hides a deeper public-health threat
The debate isn’t about “trusting experts.” It’s about who shoulders responsibility for staying healthy.

Narcan appears to work almost miraculously, reversing an opioid overdose in minutes. But exactly how it does this was a mystery since the FDA approved it in 1971.

Until now. Biology researchers have captured the mechanism at the molecular level. buff.ly/5VnUILA
How does Narcan work? Mapping how it reverses opioid overdose can provide a molecular blueprint for more effective drugs
Naloxone can reverse an overdose in minutes, but exactly how it does this at the molecular level has previously been unclear.
