Most of how local government works is conducting a listening session that only attracts the most insane and most unemployed 5% of a city who emphatically tell anyone who will listen that they want everything in one bag, but they don't want that bag to be heavy.
it's always amazing to me how people whose entire way of life and economic well-being depends on the university in their town are also, somehow, incredibly mad that they have to share that town with that university's students
tbh the entire dynamic of criticizing university housing is one of the most stupid and shortsighted elements of nimbyism writ large. universities are major economic engines! they’re also part of the broader left-wing project for other reasons, like “create social mobility” and “promote education”

I forgot about this very funny incident in 2023 when Arnold Schwarzenegger filled a "pothole" that turned out to be an active SoCalGas utility service trench www.newsweek.com/arnold-schwa...
Arnold Schwarzenegger's "giant pothole" good deed backfires
The action movie star said "this is crazy" about the "giant pothole" residents had been complaining about for weeks.

It must have been wild to be one of the five actual Facts and Logic Libertarians and go through 2020. Spending decades in the Potemkin Village for decades and then one day one of the facades falls down and you're like "hang on...wait a goddamn...does nobody else ACTUALLY LIVE HERE?!"

One of the biggest drivers of high housing costs is that a small, highly motivated group of incumbent homeowners block new housing in their neighborhoods and almost no one is organized to push back.

Young people bear the brunt of that imbalance.

Be a housing fan.

There are so many debunked cases showing that the lights are clearly aircraft, and there's not a single video showing something that is clearly a drone.
comprehensive debunk of reported drone incursions in Denmark from this past January

time and time again, when details of visual reports are provided, so-called drones usually turn out to be regular aircraft

LA just released a pretty fishy report on the first 6 months of CHIP. They take credit for 16k+ units proposed, but 9k are density bonus, which is a state program! Another 5k are ED 1 (now called AHIP) that would have been proposed without CHIP. The truly new stuff: 2300 units proposed in 6 months.

"Gehry replied: 'Look, your backyard has a trailer. That trailer is made of metal and it's not very pretty. It's sitting there, we're looking at it. Your front lawn has some old car up on blocks. I think I'm just doing what you're doing.’"

Interesting failure of a 3D printed air induction elbow that softened and collapsed in the heat of an engine bay, starving the engine of air, leading to a crash. Failure temperatures of the material when tested were about half of what was expected.

What a lede on this story: Man who complained about narrowing a road in order to protect pedestrians, so much that the city eventually reversed the change, then kills a woman on that very road with his car www.washingtonpost.com/business/int...
America’s plan to protect pedestrians failed. A young woman’s death reveals why.
U.S. officials adopted Europe's Vision Zero initiative, but many cities have seen an increase in pedestrian fatalities despite efforts to improve road safety.

Soon small businesses won’t have to wait for Small Business Saturday to get attention from their Mayor.
