This thread does a better job of capturing why the cloud isn’t merely “renting a bunch of servers” than anything else I’ve seen recently.
📣THREAD: It’s surprising to me that so many people were surprised to learn that Signal runs partly on AWS (something we can do because we use encryption to make sure no one but you–not AWS, not Signal, not anyone–can access your comms).

It’s also concerning. 1/
PSA: we're aware that Signal is down for some people. This appears to be related to a major AWS outage. Stand by.

A society that believes some ppl deserve to spend $5-10k to go watch a baseball game while other ppl deserve to starve & freeze to death on the street outside of the stadium is a society that is deeply dysfunctional.

What do you get when you cross a broccoli with a melon?

The saddest vegetable known to mankind.

The meloncoli.

The headline doesn't really reflect the majority of the actual article. Where it's clear that fault is the Trump administration. Whoever wrote that headline though hopes you don't read the article.

I live on a side street that got a contraflow bike lane a few years ago and I've noticed kids learning to ride with parents, wobbling along first and then getting their confidence over the summer. Really confirms that if we build bike lanes, they will come.
The spread to the suburbs has been so smart. The other week I was deep in Scarborough’s highland creek and there were teenagers barreling down the path on them. Many cycling seeds planted.
Bike share revenue is up over 30% compared to last year, and now has close to 300k unique customers. That is 10% of the population of Toronto! I also think that their internal forecasts are a little pessimistic pinning 2025 rides at 8.1 million. I forecast closer to 8.3M when the year is over.

GenAI truly was the worst technology to come along at this moment.

An energy and water guzzler when we most urgently need to take climate action.

A disinformation machine as our journalism fails.

A bias machine as fascism takes root.

A job killer in a cost of living crisis.
The "cognitive decline and brain damage from repeat COVID infections" and "easy to use robot that makes slop and melts your critical thinking skills" is a hell of a combo in a post-fact media ecosystem

I think a lot about how Michelle Obama remarked on regularly being in rooms with the most powerful and wealthy people in the world and her chief takeaway was that they're just not that smart

I just saw someone use the abbreviation “AI;DR” and I’ll be laughing for a while.
This is a great take on #AIArt It puts into words what I've been feeling for some time now. I encourage you to read it.
I still dislike the Star Wars sequels but can no longer fault them for running with the premise of "20 years after fascism, same fascism but now with more stupid" because (points at US)
Ugh. So hard today.

This is good —the Mayor of Yellowknife NWT in Canada’s far north weighs in on “Car Bloat” (truck bloat actually) and its many big costs & consequences (thanks @davidzipper.bsky.social for heads-up). And like most who dare tell the truth about that, he’s taking flack.

Grtea Thunberg is not a Martyr, she is a 22 year old disabled activist and Swedish citizen and deserves to be treated humanely under international law. As do all foreign nationals kid kidnapped by Israel.

Everything Israel 🇮🇱 says about Hamas is a projection. They kidnap and they torture.
Hardly any bloat and a great screen. I've always been a fan of Sony since the walan days. Have several Sony headphones to match :)

Yes, I could have gotten a "better" phone for less money. However I'd be missing one or both of my deal breaker features. This phone is great except for one thing, no support for adoptable storage. Otherwise it's great. The camera is quality and performant.
So after years of owning a Samsung A52, I've finally upgraded my phone. Due to my requirements of a headphone jack and expandable storage support my list of possible phones was limited. Plenty of low end phones with those things, but notid range. I ended up with a gray market import.
