What with the proofread and the check through, I've made so many little adjustments I think I get to have the joy of yet another final proofread. I've done on screen, on e-reader and dictation software so I guess we're back around to print again... Le sigh.

“The problem with billionaires isn’t that they’re hoarding money that would otherwise pay for a Scandinavian social utopia. It’s that their money has become a source of wildly distorted political power that allows a few men with extremist views to wreak havoc on the rest of us.”

More evidence of what i had to report to the @bsfa.bsky.social and @britfantasysoc.bsky.social this year - that publishers made a lot of noise about inclusion but have largely, in my experience, stopped working on this.

As you might imagine i have opinions.

One of the things about this study is that a lot of baby and toddler books are written in house, by editors. So the study reveals the whiteness of editorial in kidlit even if not explicitly. But, big picture, this trend is unacceptable. I remember so many promises www.theguardian.com/books/2025/o...
‘Catastrophic decline’ in Black representation in children’s books
A report by charity Inclusive Books for Children found that of the 2,721 books surveyed, only 51 featured a Black main character, down by 21.5% since 2023

As colleagues pointed out at the time, they chucked money at new imprints etc without consideration and set them up to fail because no readership is built quickly. Classic publishing, make noise & dump anything that doesn't beat the odds to become a success

I really enjoyed the Frameless thing we went to last month which I think is still on.

My quite paranoid question is, and has been since it was announced: What happens to the ceasefire after the winner is announced?

Because this was timed for him to win it. Obviously. That's not the paranoid part.

What happens when he doesn't? What happens if he does?

The more I check this MS, the more I find small continuity errors. Can't wait for the proofread to be done.

Combination of a cold and poor sleep have left me useless today. Going to do the simple stuff, get through my meeting then check out early. Not sure I should attempt anything tricksy

Sad to see my royalty statement reveal that while my first and biggest series still sells some in print, not one physical copy gets sold in the UK. Probably haven't for a while. Maybe explains why they've priced the eBook so high?

ah no, you're excluded under the revised rules?

Yeah, you'd hope so. The cost of a week's work makes it a no brainer - should have thought about it sooner really!

Wonder if I can expense a covid shot? Think I'm going to get one privately anyway, it seems to be getting going again here and I don't fancy losing a week of paid work.

Oh wow, that makes a lot of sense. It's a Murdoch company and if there's anything ole Rupert understands it's how vindictive a rich old man can be.

I think it was running down the fence he's been replacing. He didn't mean to cut it... but elderly neighbours then couldn't hear him so he had to try my house instead!

Neighbour's fence guy got locked out on the street, had to ring my doorbell to get back in as he'd mistakenly cut their doorbell cable earlier... Now three dogs are out helping him with his work, with various tennis balls and squeaky toys going round the garden.
